Job Summary
Set up, operate, and monitor lathe and turning machines to produce small metal tubes and components
Ensure products meet precise specifications and quality standards
Interpret prints, job orders, and tooling instructions to determine proper machine setup and production processes
Maintain safe and efficient machine operation in a manufacturing environment
Responsibilities
Set up and operate lathe and turning machines to turn, bore, thread, form, or face metal materials
Study prints, charts, and job orders to determine specifications, materials, and operational sequences
Adjust machine controls, cutting speeds, feed rates, and tooling to maintain required tolerances
Inspect workpieces using measuring instruments such as gauges, micrometers, and dial indicators
Monitor machine operations to ensure parts meet specifications and production standards
Select and install cutting tools, fixtures, cams, gears, and stops according to job requirements
Replace worn tools and sharpen cutting tools when necessary
Load and secure metal stock or workpieces into machines manually or using hoists
Compute machine settings and dimensions using shop mathematics when needed
Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments during machine setup and operation
Enter and track job data using ShopTrak software or ERP systems
Maintain a clean and safe work environment while following safety procedures
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred
Knowledge of lathe and turning machines, tools, and machining processes
Basic understanding of shop mathematics including decimals and fractions
Ability to read prints, technical drawings, and production layouts
Experience using precision measuring tools such as micrometers and dial indicators
Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs (with assistance when required)
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain precise tolerances
Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with repetitive tasks and machine-paced production
Comfortable standing for long periods and performing repetitive motions
Ability to work effectively with a team and communicate with supervisors and coworkers
