The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness etc.).The Lead Advanced Component Design Engineer is responsible for creating, developing, and deploying next generation gas turbine product components and technologies for use in NPI programs. The team works on emerging technologies such as Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Design Concepts. The role is a hybrid position requiring cooperation with modules and sciences teams, product management, manufacturing, and Vernova Advanced Research Center. This position is primarily a multi-disciplinary design engineering role.Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements. This work would include mechanical and/or electrical engineering for all products
- Includes direct people management responsibility including staffing and performance development. Utilizes in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline and analytical thinking and technical experience to execute policy/strategy.
- Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market
- Uses some judgment and has some ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters to address more complicated manufacturing processes with technical variety and/or interdependent production cycles. Uses technical experience and analytical thinking. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own teams to arrive at decisions.
- Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with low risks and resource requirements. Explains information; developing skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within field. Conveys performance expectations and may handle sensitive issues.
- Design and validation of next generation gas turbine components in close collaboration with key experts and strategic partners.
- Mechanical design, finite element analysis (ANSYS preferred), solid modeling (NX preferred), lifing (LCF, HCF, Creep etc.) and working with manufacturing to produce prototypes. Demonstrate working knowledge of gas turbine materials, coatings, heat transfer and aerodynamics.
- Cooperate with Modules, Sciences, AMRT, Vernova Advanced Research Center or other 3rd parties to create dependable new technologies aligned to product need.
- Energize peers with a creative and innovative problem-solving mindset with encouraging, inclusive and open-minded problem solving. Create intellectual property applications to protect company assets. Implement LEAN methods for continuous improvement to eliminate waste and increase speed.
- Execute structured problem solving and advanced computational approaches using techniques such as design-of-experiments, machine learning and probabilistic forecasting to determine the possible and probable.
- Comply with US Export Compliance regulations.
- Limited travel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college
- At least 6 years of mechanical design experience.
Desired Characteristics
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
- Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs.
- Established project management skills.
- Experience working with Agile Process as a Scrum Master.
- Experience with advanced design tools like nTop, Neural Concepts & Simufact.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Python programming.
