Lead Cultural Coordinator - Kenaitze Tribal Member Only

Reports to: Dena'ina Culture Center Manager

Employment Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: 40 Hours/52 Weeks

Job Summary

The Lead Cultural Coordinator is responsible for overseeing observers, archaeological monitoring, and recording and excavation work being conducted on historical Dena'ina lands. The Cultural Coordinator shall ensure that support is provided to the preservation and protection of the cultural resources of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe and serve as a cultural ambassador of the Tribe to minimize the potential for inadvertent impacts to archaeological sites and cultural resources.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with performing assignments, exercising judgment in evaluation, techniques and procedures for the preservation of tribal cultural resources on and off the dig sites
  • Identifies cultural and natural resources and assists in development of protective measures on historical Dena'ina lands
  • Assists with planning, directing, coordinating and performing a variety of tasks under the direction of the Cultural Resource Supervisor
  • Oversees all ground disturbing activity including, but not limited to, grading, gorse abatement, tree clearing, trenching, and excavations on undisturbed and previously disturbed ground
  • Oversees field inspections of proposed projects areas to determine the likelihood or the presence of cultural resources, and the potential archaeological sensitivity of the area
  • Performs and/or leads fieldwork surveys, excavation, monitoring, laboratory analysis and interpretation
  • Archives historical documents and artifacts, and is responsible for documenting and reporting a comprehensive and accurate log for the Cultural Resources Supervisor
  • Collaboratively teach Dena'ina culture and language speaking, reading, and writing through a bilingual approach at the Tuen Charter School
  • Participate in Dena'ina language classes to increase personal Dena'ina language speaking and writing skills
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED, or a combination of education and experience may be substituted

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience working with Cultural Programs, Archaeological Projects and/or other Government Entities
  • One (1) year experience teaching youth

Preferred

  • Working knowledge of Native American Graves Protection Repatriation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, National Historic Preservation Act and other Historic Preservation laws
  • Participation in the Kenaitze Susten Camps, K'beq', and other archaeological programs
  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities

License/Certification

  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire

Special Skills

  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, or obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others
