Job Description

TITLE: Lead English as Second Language (ESL) Youth Development ProfessionalLOCATION: MilbankREPORTS TO: Program CoordinatorCLASSIFIED: Part Time, Non-ExemptMISSION: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.JOB SUMMARY: The Lead ESL (English as a Second Language) Youth Development Professional plays a key role in supporting ESL and non-English-speaking families within the Boys & Girls Club. This position assists families with the enrollment process, provides direct support to ESL members in daily programming, and offers translation services for Club signage, marketing materials, incident reports, and family communication. The Lead ESL Professional also organizes, supervises, and evaluates daily youth programs, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment for all members while working closely with other staff.JOB DUTIES:
  • Assist ESL and non-English-speaking families with Club orientation and enrollment.
  • Provide direct support to ESL members to ensure a positive Club experience for all.
  • Translate Club materials, including programming signage, newsletters, flyers, incident reports, and closure information.
  • Support staff by updating and translating signage to ensure it is accessible to all members.
  • Provide translation assistance during parent meetings and communication with ESL families.
  • Lead, supervise, and provide feedback to assigned Youth Development Professionals and volunteers.
  • Ensure programs align with the Club’s goals and meet the needs of all youth participants.
  • Uphold a commitment to youth safety, ensuring proper supervision and a welcoming, secure environment.
  • Foster effective communication with ESL families, community members, and schools.
  • Address youth behavior challenges by implementing corrective actions and support plans.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and attractive environment for members, staff, and property.
  • Participate in and provide training for staff, as well as support special programs and events.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cultural diversity and sensitivity in working with non-English-speaking families.
  • Ability to build trust and foster positive relationships with diverse communities.
  • Address conflicts or issues to ensure a positive environment for all participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree in education, youth development, social work, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with youth, particularly in an educational or after-school setting, is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with ESL or non-English-speaking populations is a plus.
  • Fluency in English and at least one additional language commonly spoken by ESL families (e.g., Spanish, Somali, etc.).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and the second language to facilitate translation and interpretation.
  • Commitment to working four days a week
  • Committed to working school year hours (M, T, TH, F: 3:00-7:00pm) (W: 2:30-7:00PM)
  • Commitment to working at the Club during the summer 25-35 hours. (Open M-F: 7:30-6:00PM)
  • Valid CPR certification or the ability to obtain and maintain CPR certification within 90 days of employment. We provide this training in-house if you are not currently certified!
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be of the mental and physical capacity to observe, interact, and communicate with youth, staff, volunteers, etc. at the Club to ensure safety of the space and others, provide guidance and reflection per the Club priority outcomes and goals
  • Ability to stand/sit for long periods of time throughout a shift
  • This position is considered to be safety-sensitive.
