About the Role

On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced Lead Fleet Diesel Mechanic to join a growing team in Gillette, Wyoming. This is a hands-on working lead position focused primarily on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the company's fleet of diesel trucks, trailers, and support vehicles while assisting with heavy equipment maintenance as needed.

This is not a desk job. You'll spend most of your day working alongside other mechanics, troubleshooting equipment, performing repairs, and helping keep the shop operating efficiently. Leadership experience is a plus but not required-we're looking for an experienced mechanic who enjoys helping others, takes ownership of their work, and is interested in growing into additional leadership responsibilities over time.

Our equipment operates across the state of Wyoming, so when trucks and equipment are in the shop, quality repairs, preventative maintenance, and attention to detail are critical.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet & Equipment Maintenance

Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on:

  • Diesel trucks (Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Western Star, and similar)
  • Trailers and CDL fleet vehicles
  • Construction support vehicles
  • Heavy construction equipment as needed, including excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, haul trucks, and compactors

Repair and replace:

  • Diesel engines
  • Transmissions
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Brake systems
  • Steering and suspension components
  • Fuel systems

Perform preventative maintenance including:

  • Oil and fluid changes
  • Filter replacements
  • DOT inspections
  • Equipment inspections
  • Scheduled maintenance services

Fabricate hydraulic hoses and perform basic welding and fabrication as needed.

Shop Operations

  • Work alongside the Operations Manager to prioritize repairs and keep shop workflow moving efficiently.
  • Coordinate repairs to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Complete work orders and accurately document repairs and preventative maintenance.
  • Assist with ordering parts, tracking inventory, and maintaining shop supplies.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, including PPE and lockout/tagout requirements.

Team Support

  • Work closely with other mechanics to troubleshoot difficult repairs.
  • Share knowledge and mentor less experienced technicians.
  • Help maintain a positive, team-oriented culture focused on safety, quality, and efficiency.

As you grow in the role, there will be opportunities to take on additional leadership responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience repairing diesel trucks, semi-trucks, fleet vehicles, or heavy equipment
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience repairing diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, brakes, steering, and suspension
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Strong work ethic with excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced shop environment
  • Must supply and maintain personal mechanic hand tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Western Star, Cummins, Detroit, CAT, or similar equipment
  • Technical training in diesel technology or heavy equipment repair
  • CDL license
  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications
  • Experience using diagnostic software and maintenance tracking systems
  • Previous experience mentoring or leading other mechanics is a plus but not required

Equivalent work experience may be considered in place of certifications.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily in a maintenance shop with occasional outdoor work as needed.
  • Exposure to diesel equipment, noise, vibration, dust, grease, and varying weather conditions.
  • Monday–Friday schedule with regular overtime opportunities.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift 50–75 lbs regularly (up to 100 lbs with assistance)
  • Frequent standing, kneeling, bending, climbing, and working around heavy equipment
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and elevated areas

Why Join Our Team

  • Competitive hourly pay with consistent overtime opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • Stable, growing company with long-term career opportunities
  • Opportunity to grow into additional leadership responsibilities
  • Work alongside an experienced team that values quality workmanship, safety, and teamwork

If you're an experienced diesel mechanic who takes pride in quality repairs, enjoys solving challenging problems, and wants to grow with a company, we'd love to hear from you.
