Role Summary: The Lead NDT Inspection Engineer will serve as the technical subject matter expert (SME) for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) processes and material quality oversight, specifically supporting the production and industrialization of Gas Turbine components—including blades and nozzles. This role is critical to maintaining quality and reliability across our Parsippany, NJ, and Allentown, PA facilities. The role encompasses NDT method development, geometric quality assurance via CMM, and oversight of the on-site metallographic laboratory.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Authority: Serve as the SME for multiple NDT processes. Provide technical guidance to ensure process robustness and compliance.
- Dimensional & Quality Oversight: Ensure parts meet design specifications by leveraging knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and CMM inspection techniques. Oversee dimensional verification processes to ensure compliance with engineering drawings.
- Metallographic Laboratory Management: Oversee the operation of the metallographic sample preparation and inspection laboratory. Ensure proper sectioning, mounting, polishing, and microstructural analysis of components to support quality and process validation.
- Process Oversight: Review and approve Engineering Change Notices (ECN), including manufacturing operation sheets and process control sheets, ensuring all NDT and quality requirements are integrated.
- Facility Support: Provide hands-on technical support across both the Parsippany, NJ, and Allentown, PA sites.
- New Product Industrialization (NPI): Collaborate with design/manufacturing engineering to develop and qualify inspection techniques for new turbine blade and nozzle designs.
- Continuous Improvement: Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for inspection-related non-conformances and drive advancements in digital inspection, CMM programming, and lab efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a high school diploma/GED with a minimum of 8 years of equivalent experience in a related technical discipline.
- NDT Certification: Minimum of 2 ASNT Level II certifications in any of the following:
- Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)
- Eddy Current Testing (ET)
- Quality & Inspection Expertise: Strong knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and experience with CMM inspection techniques. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, and inspection requirements.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience applying NDT and quality inspection within a manufacturing environment.
- Travel: Ability to travel between Parsippany, NJ, and Allentown, PA as required.
- This role requires use of technical data subject to U.S. Government export restrictions and this posting is only for U.S. Persons (U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents and protected individuals (e.g., certain refugees and asylees)). GE will require proof of status prior to employment.
Desired Characteristics:
- Demonstrated experience in metallographic sample preparation and microstructural evaluation.
- ASNT Level III certification in one or more NDT methods.
- Familiarity with digital radiography or automated inspection systems.
- Experience related to complex rotating or hot-gas-path hardware.
- Strong working knowledge of Engineering Change Management processes and manufacturing documentation systems.
- Ability to operate effectively in a global, matrixed organization.
- Strong problem-solving mindset with a focus on safety, quality, and fleet reliability
