Job Description

Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

We're looking for a Lead UX Designer to thoughtfully contribute to our award-winning electronic health record and healthcare revenue cycle product, athenaOne.

In this role, you will help lead the UX portion of our product development process for multi-disciplinary agile R&D teams consisting of product managers, developers, data analytics specialists, and service operations agents - not to mention our customers - to define, design and test workflows that empower medical providers, coders, and billers to effectively manage and perform core claim preparation, submission, and resolution tasks. We're working to turn a complex and sometimes cumbersome set of processes into a more unified, intuitive, satisfying, and empowering experience for our users. This role is based in Boston, MA.

As a successful candidate, you are a champion for users and embrace the challenge of solving the difficult problems that present the greatest opportunities to ease the burden on healthcare workers. You'll develop a clear point of view about UX decisions and tradeoffs and collaborate with product and engineering leads to get them implemented. You will function well both independently - making well-informed design decisions on your own - and in collaboration with cross-functional partners in product, engineering, and other disciplines.

You have an eye for design, and the ability to spot small details that others might miss. You love finding ways to drive incremental but significant improvements that keep us moving towards a greater long-term vision that you helped define. You bring curiosity, empathy, and a sense of humor to everything you do. If you are looking for a company that will enable you to work outside of your comfort zone to transform the healthcare ecosystem, athenahealth is the place for you.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct primary and secondary research efforts

  • Synthesize your research to arrive at a clear framing of the problems to be solved

  • Drive alignment through strong product design narratives

  • Design scalable, web-based product experiences

  • Produce detailed design concepts and specifications for team projects

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in existing products

  • Make tradeoffs and decisions about project scope, design strategy, and implementation

  • Seek out and incorporate feedback from users and cross-functional teams

  • Promote and demonstrate design best practices for product owners, engineers, and more junior design collaborators

Design Strategy & Planning

  • Build deep understanding of user workflows and domain needs through research and analysis

  • Own the information architecture and end-to-end experience for a major product area

  • Define high-level workflows and experience frameworks to guide Agile teams

  • Influence product roadmaps by aligning design vision with business and technical priorities

  • Ground design decisions in user research, data, and success metrics

  • Facilitate cross-functional teams in building deep empathy for users and understanding real-world needs

Design Execution

  • Frame complex, user-centered problems and facilitate alignment

  • Create sketches, wireframes, and prototypes to communicate and validate ideas

  • Partner with Product and Engineering to ensure delivered solutions meet design intent and quality standards

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional design experience, preferably including enterprise, financial, or healthcare systems required

  • Experience leading significant product design initiatives, ideally in the enterprise space

  • Experience driving cross-functional, cross-product, and/or cross-geo collaborations

  • Experience solving highly complex problems for users

  • Self-directed and comfortable making decisions without perfect information

  • Interest in developing a deep understanding of the US healthcare space

  • Interest in or experience working with agile/scrum teams

  • Ability to articulate your rationale for design decisions

  • Portfolio demonstrating excellent understanding of problem framing and design communication, great interaction design skills, and attention to detail

Expected Compensation

$130,000 - $222,000

About athenahealth

Our vision: In an industry that becomes more complex by the day, we stand for simplicity. We are a diverse group of dreamers and do-ers with unique knowledge, expertise, backgrounds, and perspectives. Our DEI commitment: Our vision of accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all requires addressing the inequities that stand in the way. That's one reason we prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our business, from attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce to maintaining an inclusive environment for athenistas, our partners, customers and the communities where we work and serve.

What we can do for you:

We also encourage a better work-life balance for athenistas with our flexibility. While we know in-office collaboration is critical to our vision, we recognize that not all work needs to be done within an office environment, full-time. With consistent communication and digital collaboration tools, athenahealth enables employees to find a balance that feels fulfilling and productive for each individual situation.

In addition to our traditional benefits and perks, we sponsor events throughout the year, including book clubs, external speakers, and hackathons.
