Job Description

COMPENSATION: $65,559-$113,636 Annually; depending upon experience

The Brooklyn Waldorf School is seeking a full-time Learning Support Specialist to provide academic, social, and developmental support for students from Early Childhood through Grade 8. This role supports students with diverse learning profiles through small group instruction, assessment, classroom teaching, and collaboration with faculty, families, and external partners. 

Working under the guidance of the Director of Student Support Services, the Learning Support Specialist plays a key role in advancing an inclusive, developmentally appropriate learning environment grounded in Waldorf pedagogy and a whole-child approach to education. 

  • Provide small group learning support classes for students in Early Childhood through Grade 8. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Support Services to plan and implement academic interventions, accommodations, and differentiation strategies. 
  • Develop lesson plans with clear objectives and outcomes aligned with developmental needs and learning profiles. 
  • Provide classroom teaching support as needed, based on program needs. 
  • Create, adapt, and organize supplemental instructional materials to support students requiring accommodation. 
  • Conduct reading assessments across grades and participate in assessments of prospective students. 
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation related to student services, learning profiles, and interventions. 
  • Review neuropsychological and educational evaluations and prepare summaries for faculty reference. 
  • Support the collection and organization of documentation for DOE evaluations and communicate with the DOE as needed. 
  • Coordinate middle school academic support in Math, ELA, and test preparation in collaboration with the Director of Student Support Services. 
  • Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers to support alignment between learning support services and classroom instruction. 
  • Attend Care and Student Support Services meetings as appropriate. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with school policies and applicable laws. 
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by administration to meet programmatic needs. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree preference in Special Education, Reading and Literacy, or a related field. 
  • Minimum of five years of experience in education, including classroom teaching experience. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional pedagogy, assessment practices, and developmental needs of children. 
  • Waldorf training preferred; willingness to pursue Waldorf professional development within the first years of employment required. 
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Proficiency with Google applications (Docs, Sheets, etc.) and Macintosh operating systems. 
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use stairs for extended periods of time, with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Interest in the arts and holistic education preferred. 
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
