Job Description
A lion tamer (or animal trainer) trains and handles lions and big cats for entertainment, education, or behavioral management in circuses, zoos, or sanctuaries. They use positive reinforcement to teach commands, ensure animal well-being, monitor health, and maintain safety.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Training & Conditioning: Training lions to perform behaviors for shows or for medical exams (e.g., opening mouths, showing paws).
- Safety & Handling: Managing dangerous animals, enforcing strict safety protocols, and using equipment like chairs or whips, mostly to direct, not injure, the animals.
- Husbandry & Care: Feeding, providing exercise, and cleaning enclosures.
- Health Management: Monitoring behavior for signs of illness, documenting health status, and administering medication.
- Performance: Displaying trained behaviors in front of audiences in circus or show environments.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience with Big Cats: Extensive experience working directly with lions, tigers, or similar wild animals.
- Patience & Safety Focus: Ability to read animal body language and manage high-risk situations calmly.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
