What is the Training Coordinator at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy responsible for? The Training Coordinator's position at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy is an essential component of the Academy's operation involving the coordination and provision of education and training, to all new and existing law enforcement and corrections personnel. Work includes developing curricula, establishing criteria for educational goals and objectives, and for selecting and evaluating instructors who will be teaching law enforcement and corrections programs. Work is performed under limited supervision. Statewide travel is required. This MCJA Training Coordinator's position is one of six coordinators in the workgroup who together work to fulfill the essential statutory requirements as outlined in 25 M.R.S. chapter 341 of our core mission. This position is vital and has an important impact on law enforcement and corrections agencies throughout the state.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Plans, schedules, conducts and evaluates corrections and law enforcement training programs.
  • Instruct students in specialty areas.
  • Identify and select instructors of courses and design tests for student evaluations. Develops and writes training course goals/objectives and lesson plans.
  • Researches and identifies new and changing training subjects.
  • Training and certification for all full and part-time law enforcement and corrections officers.
  • Processes Out-of-state waiver requests.
  • Acts as primary physical fitness trainer and tester.
  • Prepares all the documentation for the MCJA Board of Trustees to approve the above-named certifications.
  • Helps other MCJA staff on all related programs held at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Teaches the Methods of Instruction class to develop newly certified instructors.

Skills or knowledge required:

  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Excellent computer/technology skills.

Minimum qualifications:

A Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or Public Education and two (2) years experience in the criminal justice system. Directly related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
