Manager, Platform Engineering - Big Data Engineering

Overview

The Manager, Platform Engineering leads a team responsible for designing, building, and operating scalable, secure, and resilient platform infrastructure. This role combines hands-on technical leadership across Mastercard's Big Data Engineering team with people management responsibilities, enabling teams to deliver high-quality solutions aligned to enterprise priorities.

This leader will drive adoption of modern engineering practices, including infrastructure as code, container platforms, CI/CD pipelines, and microservices architectures, while fostering a high-performing, collaborative team environment.

Role

Platform & Cloud Engineering Leadership

  • Lead the design and delivery of cloud infrastructure solutions that meet scalability, resilience, security, and cost efficiency requirements
  • Oversee the development and operation of container platforms and orchestration environments (e.g., Kubernetes)
  • Ensure platform capabilities support evolving application performance and business needs

DevOps & Automation

  • Establish and mature CI/CD pipelines and engineering workflows to enable efficient, high-quality software delivery
  • Drive adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to ensure consistent, automated infrastructure provisioning and management
  • Champion automation, reducing manual processes and increasing reliability and speed

Distributed Systems & Microservices

  • Guide teams in building and operating distributed systems and microservices architectures
  • Ensure systems are designed for fault tolerance, scalability, and performance
  • Oversee monitoring, observability, and operational health across platform services

Software Engineering & Technical Enablement

  • Provide technical direction across software programming practices and frameworks
  • Ensure engineering solutions meet standards for performance, maintainability, and reliability
  • Partner with application teams to align platform capabilities with development needs

Infrastructure & Operating Systems

  • Oversee management of operating systems and core IT infrastructure components (compute, storage, networking)
  • Ensure platform environments are stable, performant, and aligned with enterprise standards

All About You

Required Qualifications

  • Experience leading high performing engineering teams with a customer-focused mindset. Attracts, grows, and develops exceptional, future-ready talent in a platform, cloud, or DevOps environment
  • Strong expertise across Big Data platforms and technologies such as Hadoop, Cloudera, etc.
  • Experience managing or operating distributed systems and microservices architectures
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Go)
  • Strong understanding of operating systems and enterprise IT infrastructure
  • Experience integrating security requirements into platform engineering practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in enterprise-scale or regulated environments
  • Experience optimizing cloud cost, performance, and scalability

In line with Mastercard's total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
