Job Summary:

The Pastoral Care Manager directs the operations of the Pastoral Care department and oversees pastoral/spiritual care to patients, their loved ones, Associates, physicians, and volunteers. The Manager develops and coordinates religious, spiritual, and related services and functions within the organization, and serves as a liaison with the religious community. The Manager oversees the provision of Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) training and other hospital pastoral education and training as appropriate.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Manages departmental operations in a cost-effective manner to provide timely, quality pastoral care and counseling services to patients, families, and hospital staff.
  • Prepares, administers, and manages department budget in order to provide timely, effective services within authorized limitations.
  • Develops annual goals and objectives for the pastoral care program and oversees the implementation and evaluation of those goals.
  • Provides direction in the allocation of human resources for the department, including in the processes of interviewing, hiring, discipline, and termination.
  • Supervises and facilitates the work of those delivering pastoral care, including ensuring adequate staffing and participation in orientation and training according to MWHC, ACPE, and Joint Commission standards. Maintains the ACPE accreditation of the Clinical Pastoral Education training program.
  • Designs and coordinates educational and religious activities within the organization to serve patients, utilize staff and space, and provide comprehensive pastoral care programs.
  • Provides pastoral care and counseling for patients and families; including actively participating in the delivery of pastoral care; ensuring that all requests for spiritual care are addressed in a timely manner, appropriate worship opportunities are provided, ritual and sacramental needs are met, and making referrals to appropriate congregations or professionals/agencies as necessary to meet related spiritual issues and concerns.
  • Serves as the senior chaplain for the organization and provides support and consultation to senior leaders around issues related to spiritual care, ethics, and patient rights as requested. Provides pastoral consultation and counseling services to physicians, nurses, and other staff.
  • Supports an interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care that includes providing orientation to pastoral care to other departments, serving on institutional committees such as Clinical Ethics, Organizational Ethics, Cancer, Trauma, or Associate Assistance or others as appointed or requested, delegating this responsibility when appropriate.
  • Coordinates activities with other pastoral care providers to ensure an overall effective program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Divinity Degree or equivalent graduate theological degree required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in management/leadership required.
  • Commissioning or Ordination required.
  • Faith Group Endorsement to serve in a hospital required.
  • Certification as an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Certified Educator and evidence of good standing required.
  • Board Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or the Neshama Association of Jewish Chaplains, and evidence of good standing required.
  • Minimum of five years of hospital pastoral care experience following CPE training preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a Clinical Pastoral Education Certified Educator preferred.
