Job Summary

Investment Office General Overview

Mass General Brigham's Investment Office manages more than $30 billion for MGB, invested primarily via partnerships with third party investment management firms. Strategies in the portfolio include private equity, venture capital, long-only equities, long/short equities, and real assets investments. Our goal is to generate excellent long-term risk adjusted returns to support MGB's mission to improve the lives and health outcomes of patients globally.

The Investment Office offers a collaborative, team-oriented environment. We strive to be nimble in our pursuit of exceptional investment opportunities, as well as our support of world-class investment partners. This is a hybrid position based in Boston/Somerville, MA.

The Investment Office is looking to hire an Investment Managing Director, Real Estate, to join our investment team. This new, multi-faceted role reports directly to MGB's Chief Investment Officer and has two primary objectives:

  1. Collaborate with MGB's Chief Investment Officer and MGB leadership to design and execute our new direct real estate initiative focused on long-term, non-operating real estate investments. This individual will steer real estate investment identification, underwriting, and asset management for real estate directly held in our investment pools.

This new initiative will require real estate investment thought leadership; a strong network in, and understanding of, Greater Boston Area real estate opportunities; creative and strategic thinking; and strong leadership and collaboration abilities.

  1. Support third party investment manager underwriting primarily of real estate strategies, but with exposure to other investment areas in cooperation with our generalist investment staff. The Investment Office partners with many external investment managers to access compelling investments globally. MGB's long-duration capital, scaled asset base, partnership-oriented approach, and mission make us an attractive collaborator for managers who share our time horizon and values.

The Investment Office offers a collaborative and meritocratic environment in which all members of our investment staff sit on our internal investment committee. While our direct real estate investment efforts will be concentrated in Massachusetts, our manager underwriting efforts offer opportunities for both domestic and international travel.

Qualifications

Investment Managing Director, Real Estate responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with CIO and MGB leadership to design and execute strategic real estate investment strategy
  • Coordinate with MGB divisions to understand long-term real estate priorities
  • Proactively identify compelling investment opportunities within target areas
  • Lead all aspects of direct real estate investment underwriting and transaction execution
  • Design and oversee asset management strategy and practices for directly held properties in MGB's investment portfolio; identify opportunities for return-enhancing asset repositioning
  • Manage legal and counterparty negotiations
  • Represent MGB positively to third parties and bolster MGB's reputation in relevant networks; cultivate relationships with external sourcing nodes, counterparties, and leading vendors
  • Communicate MGB real estate investment strategy effectively to internal and external parties
  • Lead and co-lead underwriting of real estate manager investment opportunities (i.e., third party fund investments) alongside investment office colleagues
  • Actively contribute to internal investment committee discussions, asking questions and offering suggestions that drive us toward better investment decisions
  • Mentor less experienced members of the investment team; actively collaborate with other functional groups within the Investment Office
  • Candidates must be able to work a hybrid schedule from MGB's Somerville, MA (Boston area) office, as well as travel domestically and internationally

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years' investment experience, with primary focus on real estate investments and asset management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Greater Boston Area real estate market, investment landscape, counterparties, and vendors
  • Excellent analytical skills; capacity to evaluate complex transactions and identify creative solutions
  • Energetic, positive, can-do attitude; highly collaborative and team-oriented
  • Intrinsically motivated with proven success leading initiatives from ideation through execution
  • Inspired to support a mission-driven organization; dedicated to representing MGB's best interests and always acting with unquestionable ethics
  • Clear leadership skills; prior personnel management experience strongly preferred
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; comfort interacting with senior-level executives and board members
  • Excellent relationship management abilities
  • Bachelor's degree or higher with strong academic credentials
