A Brief Overview
Reporting to the Senior Managing Director, Head of Private Debt & Equity (PD&E), the Managing Director - Management of PD&E, manages and directs all aspects of portfolio management and portfolio risk management for the group’s direct debt and equity investments as well as private equity fund investments, including identifying, monitoring, and escalating emerging risks through portfolio surveillance, diversification analysis, watch list management, internal ratings, valuations, non-accruals, development and implementation of allowances and impairment methodology and calculation, internal and external client reporting, and all routine and high-touch portfolio company related activities.
This role provides independent, second-line portfolio oversight across PD&E strategies, including direct lending, equity co-investments, and private equity fund investments. Leads quarter-end portfolio monitoring activities -- valuations, internal ratings, non-accruals, and allowance/impairment assessments and prepares reporting for senior management and the Board.
What you will do
- Direct all portfolio management activities relating to independent oversight of PD&E portfolios, assessing exposures, performance, concentrations, and adherence to underwriting standards.
- Lead development of portfolio management reporting for internal and external clients, including quarterly materials for senior management, executive leadership, and the Board of Directors. Direct client communications and manage the team to ensure reporting requirements are met, including timely responses to ad hoc reporting requests.
- Partner with investment teams and corporate functions to support portfolio construction, performance analysis, and risk governance. Lead and develop the PD&E portfolio management team. Provide portfolio analytics to support pacing, allocation, concentration limits, and strategic planning.
- Develop and implement processes and procedures to monitor the ongoing credit quality of the PD&E portfolio. Collaborate with Finance and Operations on liquidity management, valuation inputs, and NAV workflows. Partner with investment teams to monitor performance, identify trends, and escalate emerging risks. Develop and evaluate response strategies and recommend actions that prioritize capital preservation.
- Oversee and coordinate portfolio actions for amendments, waivers, workouts, and restructurings, including sponsor engagement and documentation follow-up in partnership with investment and legal teams.
- Directly and proactively manage and escalate issues as they arise, coordinating with investment teams and corporate functions to drive timely resolution.
- Manage and implement internal and external audit policies and procedures relating to PD&E investments. Manage internal and external audit relationships.
- Lead and manage assigned direct reports. Perform management duties, including hiring training and development, evaluating performance, and coaching. Foster a positive and engaged work environment. Mentor associates and provide guidance on professional development.
- Manage the creation and maintenance of all software systems to track information related to RGA’s Private Debt and Equity portfolio.
Education and ExperienceRequired
- Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) in economics or finance or equivalent experience
- 12+ years experience in private credit, direct lending, or private markets portfolio oversight
- 10+ years management or leadership role
- Strong credit analysis, underwriting knowledge, and familiarity with private asset valuations
Preferred
- Master’s Degree (MA/MS/MBA)
- CFA or progressing towards a CFA
- Experience working with private equity firms/sponsors and sponsor-backed credits, including managing communications and information flow
- Working knowledge of AI-enabled workflow tools and process automation, with ability to partner with data/technology teams to identify and implement use cases (AI expertise not required)
- Experience managing multi‑strategy portfolios
- Experience with private credit and private equity portfolio management and workflow software
- Experience providing oversight of underperforming positions and remediation planning
- Prior experience managing in investment management for insurance client assets

- Advanced analytical, reporting, and financial modeling skills, including proficiency with spreadsheets and investment analysis tools

- Exceptional oral and written communication skills including presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to convey information in a way that is clear, concise and effective to stakeholders and team members
- Highly advanced ability to adapt new methods, work under tight deadlines and stressful conditions
- Expert skills in managing multiple projects and/or sub-teams simultaneously
- Expert ability to lead and work effectively within teams, fostering a collaborative and customer service-focused environment
- Expert ability to liaise with individuals across a wide variety of operational, functional, and technical disciplines
- Expert persuasion and negotiation skills when working with internal/external customers to resolve issues/problems
- Advanced people management skills, demonstrating the ability to lead, mentor, and develop associates; including the ability to delegate key areas of responsibility
- Exceptional ability to make timely and effective decisions and produce results through strategic planning and the implementation and evaluation of programs and policies
Preferred
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of asset/liability management in an insurance context
- Demonstrated track record of superior risk-adjusted investment performance in credit

Compensation Range:
$207,250.00 - $308,620.00 AnnualBase pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
