Job Description
Job Title: Machinist
Job Summary
Under minimal supervision, operate manual and CNC machines, hand tools, and measuring equipment
Perform fabrication, modification, and repair of products and tools
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Machine parts to print or work order specifications
Perform turning, milling, drilling, tapping, and deburring operations
Use gauges and measuring instruments to hold tolerances up to .0005 inches
Inspect all workpieces to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications
Inspect incoming materials before starting work and finished parts after completion
Notify supervisor of discrepancies, defects, or concerns
Provide feedback to engineering on fabrication or process issues
Track time and attendance accurately in the ERP system
Follow all safety requirements and procedures
Comply with company policies, specifications, regulations, and instructions
Work cooperatively with coworkers and supervisors
Perform other related duties as assigned
Shop Lead Responsibilities (when applicable)
Coordinate workflow and machine operations with the Shop Supervisor
Train and guide shop personnel
Inspect parts before transfer to the next operation to ensure accuracy and completeness
Qualifications
Ability to perform all essential duties satisfactorily
Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED required
Trade school or college coursework preferred
Minimum 5 years of machining or machine shop experience
Language Skills
Ability to read, write, and understand job instructions in English
Communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers and supervisors
Mathematical Skills
Basic math skills
Basic trigonometry
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions
Monitor processes and materials to identify issues
Apply general rules to specific machining and production problems
Physical Demands
Ability to stand for extended periods
Hands-on work requiring manual dexterity and steady use of arms, shoulders, and back
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs unassisted
Vision requirements include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
General Notes
Understand how assigned work fits into the overall manufacturing process
Plan work with awareness of lead times and downstream department needs
Perform all work strictly to print or order specifications
Inspect materials and documentation before starting and before passing work to the next operation
Report and correct any non-conformances
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area
Perform daily cleaning and light maintenance of machinery and equipment
Protect all proprietary Western Gage documents and information; do not remove or disclose without authorization
