Job Description:
Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer, Senior – DFA Engineer
Genie Industries, a business segment of the Terex Corporation, is headquartered in Bothell, WA with branch offices worldwide; we manufacture material lifts, aerial work platforms, trailer-mounted booms and light towers, telehandlers, scissor lifts and self-propelled telescopic and articulating booms. We are a company with a strong safety first mentality, team based culture, respect for the individual and high integrity. This position is located in Redmond, WA.Role Purpose
The Senior Manufacturing Engineer – Design for Automation (DFA) is responsible for enabling automation‑ready, scalable, and repeatable manufacturing solutions for Genie products by leading DFA efforts upstream through New Product Development (NPD) and supporting robust execution across Manufacturing Engineering and Manufacturing Technical Services (MTS).
This senior‑level role serves as a recognized technical authority for automation‑critical manufacturing processes, ensuring Genie products are designed for efficient, low‑risk global production and aligned with Terex Factory of the Future (FOF) objectives. The role bridges Design Engineering, Plant Manufacturing Engineering, and MTS, providing technical leadership to reduce variation, cost, and downstream automation risk.
Responsibilities
Design for Automation (DFA) – NPD & Upstream Enablement
Lead and own Design for Automation (DFA) activities through Genie NPD phase gates and prior to design freeze, ensuring automation capability is designed in rather than retrofitted downstream.
Provide senior‑level technical influence on product and process design including weldments, assemblies, interfaces, tolerances, materials, and part presentation to enable scalable automation across Genie global plants.
Evaluate and apply DFA principles to major Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) where automation risk, manufacturability impact, or cost opportunity exists.
Act as a key technical partner to Design Engineering, providing clear recommendations on automation readiness, manufacturability, and total cost of ownership.
Manufacturing Engineering
Lead the design, development, and optimization of manufacturing processes using a combination of automation, robotics, and efficient manual operations.
Provide senior level engineering support for complex production issues, serving as an escalation point for automation‑related challenges.
Support and technically lead product line transfers, startups, and process duplication in partnership with global Genie plants and MTS sending/receiving teams.
Translate engineering designs into robust production solutions, including layouts, equipment sequencing, tooling strategies, and process definitions suitable for global deployment.
Manufacturing Process SME Ownership
Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for automation‑critical manufacturing processes including welding, assembly, tooling/fixturing, material handling and critical torquing.
Define and own automation‑capable process requirements, technical criteria, and design constraints aligned with Genie and Terex standards.
Lead or provide expert support for PFMEAs, CTQs, and manufacturing capability reviews, ensuring automation risks are identified and mitigated early.
DFA Standards, Governance & Factory of the Future
Develop, maintain, and govern Genie DFA standards, rules, and guidelines, ensuring consistent application across platforms and plants.
Establish and enforce governance for automation‑related design decisions, documenting standards and best practices for reuse across Genie product lines.
Actively support Genie process automation initiatives by enabling repeatable, scalable, and transferable manufacturing and automation solutions.
Apply Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, and structured problem‑solving methodologies to drive improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Electrical, Industrial, Civil or Aeronautical) that is ABET accredited.
Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting manufacturing operations, NPD, or production process development in an industrial environment.
Senior‑Level Experience & Project Implementation Requirements
Demonstrated experience leading and successfully implementing manufacturing or automation projects from concept through production release.
Proven ability to deliver projects that meet scope, cost, schedule, and performance objectives, including capital equipment or process implementation projects.
Experience developing technical requirements, supporting capital justification, and executing projects through design, build, installation, commissioning, and ramp‑up.
Ability to lead cross‑functional project teams, coordinating with Design Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and external suppliers or integrators.
Track record of delivering measurable results such as cost reduction, risk reduction, quality improvement, throughput improvement, or automation readiness.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience leading or influencing automation, robotics, or automated manufacturing systems.
Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent CAD tools, with the ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
Hands‑on experience with welding, machining, assembly, fixturing, and production equipment.
Proven ability to lead technically across functions, with strong communication skills and experience working with global manufacturing teams.
