Job Description

Does designing solutions to unique and novel problems and working with a collaborative, multidisciplinary, caring team excite you? Do you love fast-paced, flexible, and fun environments?

If so, we have a career for you!

Understory's Marketing Manager partners closely with the executive team to define and execute an integrated, company-wide marketing strategy. This role requires a professional who can think strategically about market positioning and growth while also rolling up their sleeves to drive day-to-day execution across all facets of marketing. From shaping brand and product messaging, to building demand generation programs, to enabling sales through partner and field marketing, you’ll oversee the full marketing mix.

You will balance high-level strategy with hands-on ownership—developing frameworks, managing external partners, and directly executing campaigns and initiatives as needed. The Marketing Manager's efforts will expand awareness of Understory’s unique value proposition, generate measurable demand, and strengthen our competitive position in the insurance and technology markets.

Your main role responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Storytelling: Serve as Understory’s chief storyteller, reporting directly to the CEO. Build a deep understanding of our products, history, growth, and market relevance to communicate our trajectory with clarity and impact.
  • Product Marketing: Own product marketing strategy, including messaging and positioning, narratives for clients and broker partners, market and competitive analysis, pricing and packaging, collateral and white paper development, and new product launches.
  • External Communications: Act as a primary company spokesperson with press and industry analysts. Manage and guide our public relations agency to amplify Understory’s voice, ensuring consistent messaging across all external channels. Maintain editorial oversight for all content released on behalf of the company.
  • Internal Communications: Establish and implement marketing policies, ensuring consistent communication of brand standards and strategy across the organization.
  • Brand & Digital Marketing: Define and oversee brand strategy, directing external partners to execute advertising, branding, and digital marketing initiatives that strengthen market presence.
  • Events & Field Marketing: Manage Understory-led conferences – deliver live/virtual trainings at Understory-hosted risk-mitigation workshops, member group captive conferences, and webinars in partnership with our meteorologists and risk/ops teams.
  • Partner Marketing: Collaborate with Sales to create and manage channel and partner marketing strategies, publish updates on risk mitigation wins and client learnings, campaigns, and supporting collateral to train new and existing retail agents on our program structure, underwriting philosophy, risk-mitigation best practices, and how to use our alerts with clients.
  • Performance & Analytics: Define, track, and report on key performance metrics to measure the effectiveness and ROI of marketing programs.
  • Industry Engagement: Travel up to 25% to represent Understory at key industry events, conferences, and partner engagements.

You're exactly what we're looking for if you:

  • Willing to work a hybrid work schedule (2-3 days per week in office) in our Madison, WI HQ
  • 4-5+ years marketing experience marketing in the insurance or insurtech sectors - preference towards individuals with experience in commercial P&C insurance or MGA/MGU environments.
  • Bachelor’s in marketing or related field, MBA preferred
  • Exceptional track record of developing and implementing marketing strategies that have consistently met or exceeded planned objectives
  • Have channel enablement experience (toolkits, content, academies, train-the-trainer) and enjoy working with large channel networks.
  • Able to work positively and collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environments

Compensation includes

  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
