Job Description

Position Overview

Mack Molding Company is seeking a Materials Manager to lead and coordinate the plant's materials functions, including production control, purchasing and inventory control. This position is responsible for aligning materials planning and execution with customer requirements, manufacturing priorities and financial goals. The successful candidate will provide strong direction to the materials team, support on-time delivery and quality performance, and maintain accurate sales, inventory, labor and capacity projections.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead plant staff position in the absence of the Plant Manager.
  • Interact with the Business Unit to ensure customer service and satisfaction.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of the Production Control Manager, Purchasing Manager, and Inventory Control Manager to ensure excellent customer service and satisfaction through on-time shipments and outstanding quality.
  • Plan and control manufacturing costs to meet P&L budgets.
  • Provide direction and support to all materials personnel; identify training needs and coordinate training and development objectives for materials personnel.
  • Maintain monthly and quarterly sales figures and projections.
  • Own monthly inventory reports and balances.
  • Calculate projections for labor and capacity requirements.
  • Maintain ISO compliance through the use and understanding of Mack ISO policies and procedures.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations; hold all employees accountable for safety.
  • Maintain Mack's standard of housekeeping in all areas.
  • Perform all other duties necessitated by changing business conditions.

Job Qualifications / License / Education / Required Experience

  • Four-year college degree in business or engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in manufacturing management or materials management.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization and with customers.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and management skills.
  • Experience with MRP systems and shop floor control, as well as MS Word and MS Excel.

Unusual Working Conditions

  • Exposure in-plant to temperatures between 50°F and 110°F and to plant odors from plastic and paint processing.

The following recurring tasks make up the day-to-day standard work of the Materials Manager. Report names and system references (e.g., Mapics, Release Accounting) reflect the plant's current ERP and reporting environment and should be updated if systems change.

Daily

  • Attend the daily production meeting chaired by the Production Control Manager.
  • Approve requisitions as needed.

Weekly

  • Run monthly sales at least two to three times a week to update the sales report.
  • Run and archive sales for the calendar year every Monday to ensure order integrity.
  • Run interplant ISL orders once a week.
  • If sales look correct, run the MSRP report and apply department labor totals to configure manpower required in molding, finishing, and paint.
  • Run the Finished Goods report to total all 90-class RMs the plant produced for the previous week; this is the last entry on the Value-Add report.
  • Update the Value-Add report and distribute it.
  • Run the Stock Status report several times a week to track NPV and catch possible scanning errors.
  • Manage the paint and packaging GL accounts.
  • Check cycle count activity to ensure compliance with the monthly targets set by Accounting.
  • Calculate the percentage of direct and indirect labor dollars against sales/finished goods produced.

Monthly

  • Perform month-end inventory: Stock Status report, WIP report, Receipts for Resin, Components (30-class), MPC, and ISL; part sales, miscellaneous sales, and packaging sales. Reconcile all reports.
  • Summarize all reports for the Plant President, Plant Manager, and Finance.
  • Assist the Plant Manager with the monthly P&L review with Finance, focusing primarily on Sales, NPV, and the Packaging and Paint general ledger accounts.

Quarterly

  • Perform month-end inventory: Stock Status report, WIP report, Receipts for Resin, Components (30-class), MPC, and ISL; part sales, miscellaneous sales, and packaging sales. Reconcile all reports.
  • Work to reduce or eliminate potential inventory devaluation on the slow-moving inventory list provided by Finance.
  • Work with Customer Service and Account Management to ship all available product, support quarterly sales goals, and maximize profitability.
  • Once the quarterly forecast is released, calculate the machine capacity analysis. Import routers from Mapics, align forecasts with the correct work centers, calculate hours, and check for errors.
  • From the quarterly forecast, create a Value Add/Material Usage report. This requires importing the End Item Cost Summary from the Engineering tab in Release Accounting. Once calculated, align it with the forecast - the results cover roughly 90% of the forecast, and the balance must be calculated manually.
  • From the Value Add/Material Usage data, build the new quarterly Value-Add report template. Multiple source reports are required to compile this spreadsheet.

Yearly

  • Respond to Finance's request (in June) for the annual WIP cost report; IT runs the report, and each part number's WIP value must be updated. Submit the report to Finance prior to year-end inventory and reconcile any proposed changes with Finance.
  • Prepare for physical inventory: monitor progress of counting all partials and label accordingly; combine like product/lot numbers to reduce inventory tag writing; conduct cycle counts; ship all available product; recruit auditors and tag writers; schedule a training session; and coordinate the inventory schedule with Finance.
  • On inventory day, run the Stock Status report and Inventory Location report and send both to Finance.
  • Once physical inventory is complete, run the variance report and correct all errors.
  • Meet with Finance to reconcile the variance; once all parties are satisfied, post the inventory.
  • Perform year-end inventory: Stock Status report, WIP report, Receipts for Resin, Components (30-class), MPC, and ISL; part sales, miscellaneous sales, and packaging sales. Reconcile all reports and send the Tag Edit file and variance report to Finance.
