Senior CATIA V5 Mechanical Designer / Checker – Body-in-White (BIW) Tooling & Transfer SystemsLocation: Southfield, MITravel: 5–20% (Domestic & International as Required)About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced Senior CATIA V5 Mechanical Designer / Checker with a strong background in Body-in-White (BIW) tooling, transfer systems, and fixture design. This position is focused on automotive body shop automation and requires hands-on experience designing and checking tooling for production environments.ResponsibilitiesDesign and check Body-in-White (BIW) tooling using CATIA V5Develop detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawingsDesign transfer systems and tooling fixtures for automotive body shopsModify existing tooling and develop new mechanical designs for simple to complex systemsCreate kit sheets illustrating design revisions and modificationsReview customer specifications, sketches, and engineering data to ensure design accuracyApply North American automotive standards and customer specifications throughout the design processCoordinate with Project Engineers, Technical Leaders, Mechanical Engineers, suppliers, and manufacturing teamsSupport supplier integration, purchased components, and imported CAD modelsParticipate in installation, startup, debugging, and final equipment acceptance as neededRequired QualificationsApproximately 8+ years of mechanical design experienceExpert proficiency with CATIA V5Extensive experience with Body-in-White (BIW) toolingStrong background in Transfer System Design & CoordinationExperience designing:GEO SystemsFraming LinesBodyside SystemsSub-Assembly FixturesTooling FixturesTransfer SystemsKnowledge of:North American automotive standardsBody assembly geometryFixture toolingTool stack-up methodologyAuto assembly strategiesPart flow through body shopsPallet systemsRobot systemsExperience importing and coordinating purchased components including:Weld GunsEnd-of-Arm Tooling (EOAT)SwitchesSupplier ModelsFamiliarity with:NAAMS StandardsCustomer CAD StandardsCAD attributesCAD checking proceduresProficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)Preferred QualificationsAssociate Degree in Mechanical Technology or equivalent experienceAdditional experience with Powertrain automation projectsUnderstanding of mechanical design sequences and controls documentationStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skillsAbility to interpret customer specifications and technical documentationKnowledge of manufacturing processes and mechanical systemsAbility to work independently and within cross-functional engineering teamsTravelDomestic and international travel may be required (approximately 5–20%) to support equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and customer acceptance.Ideal BackgroundsBody-in-White (BIW)Automotive ToolingAutomation SystemsTransfer SystemsTooling FixturesMachine BuildingAutomotive Assembly EquipmentCATIA V5 Mechanical Design
