Mechanical Design Engineer

About Our Client:

Our client, a member of an industry leading conglomerate, has been in business for more than 50 years providing state-of-the-art processing equipment for our partners in the food industry. They specialize in providing total line solutions—from consultation through system design, manufacturing, and integration. Their cutting-edge technology focuses on turnkey systems for high-capacity further processing lines.

Job Summary:

  • The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing high quality but cost-effective machinery for the poultry and food processing industry.
  • As our client broadens its product line the Mechanical Design Engineer will design equipment from concept to completion.
  • Through field research and communication with the stakeholders, the engineer will manage the equipment until a mature product line is established.
  • The Mechanical Design Engineer will develop prototyping and testing plans to determine the machines’ optimum performance and create SOPs before delivery of the end product.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Create complex 3d models, validate motion and generate 2d drawings that adhere to the company’s GD&T standards and callouts.
  • Generate BOMs for machines or subassemblies and work with the project managers to ensure parts are properly quoted for function and sourced from the most cost-effective vendor.
  • Design for manufacturability; monitor designs throughout the fabrication process and design any jigs required for precise assembly.
  • Knowledge of sanitary design practices.
  • Knowledge of industry specific mechanisms such as bearings, belting (Wire Belting and plastic belting).
  • Knowledge of stainless-steel fabrication (bending, welding). Ability to select the best plastic material for the application (UHMW, Nylon, Delrin or Teflon).
  • Continually responsible for understanding the designs of our client's product offerings by working with product line specialists and by observing and operating our equipment on customer sites.
  • Plan, execute, and complete projects within an established time frame.
  • Implement automation components within mechanical designs such as AC motors, Gearboxes, level control sensors, prox switches and temperature sensors.
  • Sound knowledge of mechanical engineering science and practice. (Stress and deflection of structures, power and torque of drivetrains, inertia of machinery and mechanisms.
  • Work as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail and an ability to see the wider context of project work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, able to liaise with others at all levels in the company and with customers and suppliers.
  • Strong work ethic and focus on delivery.
  • Performs other related duties/projects as assigned.

  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software – eciM1 (preferred)
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution Software (MES) (preferred)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Power Business Intelligence (BI) platform (preferred)
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and communicate effectively within a team.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience using AutoCad, SolidWorks or similar program, to design equipment and parts
  • Proficient with Large 3D solid modeling and detailing
  • Experience with welding, machining, and grinding manufacturing processes
  • Strong grasp of dimensioning and tolerance methods
  • Working knowledge of sheet metal (properties of various alloys) and frame type weldments
  • Ability to design and develop flat patterns for manufacturing
  • Ability to design and develop welding fixtures and various tools to aid manufacturing
  • Concept and understanding of CNC lathe and machining
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to reliably commute or relocate to Gainesville, GA 30504
