Montgomery College is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert for electrical design across 3 multi-building campuses. Under the supervision of the College Architect, this role is responsible for designing and supervising the in-house and contracted construction of heating, cooling, ventilating, and plumbing of building systems across the College. The Mechanical Engineer applies technical engineering principles and concepts to a wide range of mechanical systems that serve students, faculty, and the broader community every day.

This position is ideal for a licensed professional who can work independently, guide projects from design through construction completion, and confidently sign and seal building plans.

The typical work schedule for this position is Monday- Friday, 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. This is a grade 33, non-bargaining, exempt position located at Central Services in Rockville.

What You Will Do

As the College's in-house mechanical engineering expert, you will lead mechanical design for new construction and renovation projects and support projects through construction completion.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the mechanical design subject matter expert for new construction and renovated College buildings.
  • Designing HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm, and sprinkler systems for new construction and renovation.
  • Preparing engineering drawings for both in-house and contracted construction work.
  • Managing the permit process with governmental agencies.
  • Meeting with internal clients to determine mechanical requirements for each project, investigating existing conditions to include in designs, and advising the College Architect of any mechanical problems discovered.
  • Collaborating with the Procurement Department to prepare bids for contracted construction work.
  • Inspecting construction while in process to ensure it is completed in accordance with design plans.
  • Project managing and overseeing outside contractors during construction.
  • Reviewing and approving contractor pay applications.
  • Provides technical subject matter expertise on design and construction needs to other college units.
  • Reviewing consultant-prepared mechanical drawings, plans, details, and specifications for technical accuracy, coordination, and code compliance.
  • Inspecting and evaluating existing mechanical systems and developing capital replacement planning in collaboration with the College Architect and Director of Planning, Engineering and Capital Budgets.
  • Investigating, identifying, and resolving engineering problems associated with Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Building Automation System (BAS) controls, plumbing, and fire protection.
  • Apply sound judgment, professionalism, and composure in a fast-moving environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible experience designing mechanical engineering for buildings.
  • Maryland Professional Engineer (PE) license and a valid driver's license.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and constructing mechanical systems for commercial or higher education buildings.
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and related mechanical systems, energy conservation and sustainable strategies, mechanical, energy, life safety, and accessibility codes, and construction methodologies.
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Confidently troubleshoot and resolve issues in fast-paced, active construction environments.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, or experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Driver's License- Motor Vehicle Administration
  • Maryland Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • LEED Green Associate (GA) certification
  • LEED Accredited Professional (AP) certification
  • Knowledge and previous experience with energy modeling software

Salary range: $86,709 - $119,224 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $151,740 annually.
