This Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership across the design, development, validation, and sustaining of advanced fiber optic and telecommunication products for defense and aerospace applications. The role owns complex mechanical systems from concept through production, drives design robustness, and ensures compliance with military, aerospace, and customer requirements.

The Lead Engineer partners closely with Engineering Leadership, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Business teams to guide technical strategy, lead design execution, and mentor junior engineers. This role is accountable for design integrity, manufacturability, and lifecycle documentation while enabling innovation, cost optimization, and continuous improvement across programs.

Mandatory Skills:

  • 6+ years of experience driving execution of complex mechanical designs and sustaining engineering activities in defence, aerospace, or high-reliability hardware systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (and AutoCAD) for complex assemblies, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design optimization.
  • Strong expertise in GD&T per ANSI Y14.5, tolerance analysis, and mechanical stress evaluation for high-precision components.
  • Proven experience leading prototype builds, design validation, and transition to production, including issue resolution during ramp-up.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead root cause analysis efforts and drive corrective and preventive design actions.
  • Strong communication, technical leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills in fast-paced environments.

Desired Skills:

  • Provide technical leadership for mechanical system design from concept through production, ensuring performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Lead creation, review, and approval of complex CAD models, assemblies, and PMI-compliant engineering drawings.
  • Drive execution of complex design changes including model and drawing revisions, design justifications, tolerance stack-ups, verification testing, and root cause analyses.
  • Apply advanced engineering calculations, simulations, FEA, and trade studies to guide material and design decisions.
  • Own DFM/DFA strategy and partner with Manufacturing Engineering to improve process capability, yield, and product robustness.
  • Lead prototype builds, oversee 3D printing for rapid iteration, and guide CMM-based dimensional validation activities.
  • Support and guide RF and optical test setup and troubleshooting during DV&V and production readiness phases.
  • Manage and approve design control and lifecycle documentation, including revisions, compliance records, and configuration management.
  • Lead supplier technical engagement, qualification, and ongoing support for materials, components, and manufacturing processes.
  • Drive New Product Introduction (NPI) and customer-driven engineering programs, ensuring schedule, quality, and technical alignment.
  • Identify innovation opportunities through technology scouting, patent reviews, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Support invention disclosure, IP development, and internal technical white papers or presentations.
  • Mentor and technically guide junior engineers and technicians, strengthening design rigor and engineering best practices.
  • Lead cross-functional design reviews, resolve technical trade-offs, and ensure alignment with business and regulatory objectives.
  • Willingness to travel as required for supplier, customer, or program needs.

Opportunities for Growth

  • Own technically complex, cross-functional engineering programs with high visibility across leadership teams.
  • Expand leadership responsibilities through mentoring, technical governance, and process improvements.
  • Gain deeper exposure to defense and aerospace standards, ruggedized systems, and advanced fiber optic technologies.
  • Progress into Senior Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer, or Engineering Manager roles based on performance and leadership impact

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with military or naval shipboard fiber optic and signal cable infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with defense and aerospace compliance frameworks (MIL, IEC, TIA, VITA, SOSA).
  • Exposure to government programs and ruggedized product development.
  • Experience with ERP systems (Costpoint preferred) and MS Office tools.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent relevant experience).
  • 6-10 years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, with demonstrated technical leadership on complex hardware programs.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while providing direction to others.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with a data-driven mindset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to influence stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable to changing priorities and business needs.
  • Proactive, result-oriented, and persistent in driving solutions to completion.

Following receipt of a conditional offer of employment, candidates will be required to complete additional job-related screening processes as permitted or required by applicable law.
