Job Description

Department: Klamath County Sheriff's OfficePosition: Medical AssistantSalary: $19.58 - $25.49 per hourGeneral SummaryProvides medical health care and assessment to inmates incarcerated at the Klamath County Jail.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.
  • Evaluates people arrested for acceptance into jail; processes and completes initial medical screening.
  • Evaluates vital signs and verifies medications.
  • Evaluates for drug and alcohol withdrawal.
  • Treats minor wounds and illnesses.
  • Responds to and manages medical emergencies in the facility.
  • Assists other medical staff with managing medical care for inmates with chronic and acute illness.
  • Coordinates ambulance transfers with local Fire/EMS service.
  • Coordinates private vehicle transfer for medical appointments.
  • Dispenses prescription and non-prescription medications according to physician's and FNP orders.
  • Maintains medical records within the facility, including computer data entry and filing.
  • Orders supplies as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Training PeriodOver 6 months up to and including 1 year (excluding the orientation time required of a fully qualified worker to become accustomed to the special conditions of any new job).Language SkillsAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.Reasoning AbilityAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Computer SkillsTo perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Excel Spreadsheet software and Epic, Word, Publisher, OHP, Alert & CCare Word Processing software.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic or above OR an Oregon Certification as a CNA or CMA.
  • CPR Certification
  • Valid Oregon Driver's License
  • Satisfactory criminal history and background review as determined by the Sheriff's Office.
Other QualificationsA minimum of six months experience in a health setting as a laboratory assistant or medical or nursing assistant; possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. Post-secondary training as a Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant required.Requires some knowledge of community health care services; basic knowledge of the processes involved in the operation of a medical office; some knowledge of basic medical equipment.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.DRIVING: Periodic - Does not occur on every shiftA current, valid, and properly classed driver's license is required; driving record must, for a period of three years immediately preceding employment or any date during employment thereafter, be free of any violation for: 1) reckless driving, 2) hit and run, 3) driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or 4) more than one moving violation of any other type.  Operate motor vehicle, as in a car, in the course of one's employment. Must have current, valid insurance for driving a motor vehicle.Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.Work ScheduleThis is a full time position that may include weekends and evenings. Exact schedule is to be determined by management. It is the attendance standards of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work. Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.  Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.
