Description

Incumbent serves as Medical Assistant for the Tippecanoe County Health Department, responsible for providing clinical and administrative support to nursing and medical staff of the clinic-based divisions.

DUTIES:

  • Administers various health testing, including collecting specimens, preparing and shipping of blood, stool, sputum, oral swab, other bodily exudate, TB skin testing, administering immunizations, rapid HIV/HCV, food and waterborne testing, STD, lead and nutritional screening.
  • Provides administrative duties, including in person and over the phone for Health Department specialties, checking in/out, scheduling follow-up appointments, verifying demographics and pay status, verifying Medicaid eligibility, and performing triage as needed.
  • Performs various procedures, such as obtaining client vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, oximetry, height, weight, body mass index and health history review.
  • Manages Emergency Medical Records (EMR), including scanning and indexing health records, entering data into CHIRP immunization registry, electronic health records and internal databases.
  • Manages practicing infection control measures for Department and educating clients regarding communicable disease risk reduction.
  • Performs various front desk bookkeeping duties, including cash register operations, cash and credit transactions, verifying counts and balancing register daily.
  • Assists with inventory management of clinical supplies, immunizations, and medications.
  • Performs other Department position duties through regular cross-training to maintain division efficiencies.

Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

  • Associates Degree or Certification Program in Medical Assisting and one (1) year of experience required.
  • Practical knowledge of and ability to perform phlebotomy, immunizations, vital signs, body measurements, various testing, lead and nutritional screening, and collecting and preparing various specimen.
  • Working knowledge of Department bloodborne pathogen exposure reporting procedures, and ability to protect oneself from contracting infectious diseases by avoiding high risk environments and by having knowledge of and utilizing universal health precautions.
  • Working knowledge of standard office policies and procedures with computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, email, internet, and Department-specific software systems, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and ability to prepare correspondence and detailed reports as required.
  • Ability to be cross trained to perform duties of Department staff.
  • Ability to read and interpret medical terminology, and knowledge of infection control measures.
  • Ability to count, compute, and perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to perform complex duties when administering public health testing.
  • Ability to properly operate standard medical office equipment, including computer, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, translation line, blood centrifuge, laminator, and postage stamp machine.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Shall comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Indiana Department of Health (IDOH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, various public health agencies, drug company representatives, emergency response agencies, hospitals and clinics, area schools, various boards, community agencies, and the public, in a courteous and tactful manner, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment on several tasks at the same time, occasionally under time pressure.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record

RESPONSIBILITY

  • Incumbent performs a variety of relatively standardized assignments according to established operating policies and practices of Department. Errors in decision or accuracy of work are generally detected by procedural safeguards or through supervisor review of work. Work requires some judgment when educating clients regarding communicable disease risk reduction. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with procedural requirements.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, Indiana Department of Health (IDOH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, various public health agencies, drug company representatives, emergency response agencies, hospitals and clinics, area schools, various boards, community agencies, and the public exchanging information and rendering service.
  • Incumbent reports directly to the Nursing Supervisor.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Incumbent performs duties in a standard clinic environment, involving sitting/walking/standing at will, Sitting/walking/standing for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, bending, pushing/pulling objects, reaching over head, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, exposure to extreme temperatures and chemicals, with frequent exposure to dangerous equipment, noise and noxious odors/fumes and may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
