Position Overview

  • The Medical Assistant (MA) provides compassionate and individualized care to inpatients and outpatients, and clinical assistance to providers of patients scheduled for cardiac ultrasound testing, as well as assist other staff to ensure an efficient quality and safety-based work flow.
  • Maintains neat, clean and safe patient care areas; maintains supply inventory ensuring proper par levels and product expiration. Provides efficient set-up and turnover of procedure room between patients and maintains positive patient interaction while providing safe patient care. This role is key in facilitating department flow by rooming patients, taking vital signs, performing EKG's, and other skilled tasks such as providing ongoing administrative support to clinic operations.
  • Must possess knowledge of clinic-based procedures, including standard precautions, utilization of specialized equipment and instrument cleaning and setup. Understanding of office routines, patient check-in/discharge processes and information systems as needed. Requires discretion and judgment to organize priorities, complete tasks and handle confidential patient information.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up procedure suite prior to each patient with all needed specialized equipment. Prepare exam rooms and holding area including cleaning and re-stocking on a per patient and daily basis
  • Closely assist registered nurses (RNs) with patient preparation and positioning, preparation of specialized equipment, patient vital signs, EKG's, and post-procedure patient care
  • Perform high-level disinfection of equipment associated with cardiac ultrasound procedures
  • Assist RNs with monitoring and patient care of inpatients traveling to the lab and serve as a liaison between the lab and customer service for patient transport and supply orders
  • Keep track of clinical supply inventories and coordinate the ordering of replacement supply items by the appropriate support staff in a timely fashion
  • Promote patient satisfaction by interacting with patients and co-workers in a professional and courteous manner
  • Read, understand, and annually review all unit and institutional and lab policies and procedures relating to the performance of the duties and responsibilities of the Medical Assistant
  • Perform daily quality control measures including glucometer testing
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with Physicians, Registered Nurses, Cardiac Sonographers and Administrative staff team to facilitate departmental flow
  • Participate in quality assurance activities of the department
  • Assume other responsibilities & duties within their scope of practice

  • Maintain and update skills based on current practice
  • Adhere to departmental and hospital wide requirements for required training
  • Identifies specific learning needs and goals and collaborates with leadership in developing a plan to meet them

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Comfortable working in an environment where sedating procedures are performed
  • Possess technical skills to assist registered nurses with preparing procedural equipment
  • Ability to communicate with and comfort patients undergoing sedating procedures
  • Self-managed with a demonstrated ability to take initiative and ensure improvement in job responsibilities, patient care and working relationships
  • Careful and accurate record keeping
  • Proficient in computer technology, medical equipment, electronic medical record systems (preferable knowledge of Epic)
  • Ability to work with others with diverse backgrounds and personalities
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a multi-tasking and environment
  • Is knowledgeable and compliant in all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements, including hospital policy and procedures (where applicable), the Joint Commission, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

Qualifications

  • Current licensure/certificate as a Medical Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Past experience as a MA of 1-2 years in a hospital or busy physician practice required
  • Successful completion of hospital and departmental training

Job Summary

Summary:

The role supports healthcare teams by assisting with both clinical and non-clinical patient services under the direction of healthcare providers. This role involves direct interaction with patients to ensure their comfort and address concerns, as well as collaboration with physicians and nursing staff to facilitate efficient care.

Essential Functions:

  • Show patients to procedure & exam rooms, prepare necessary equipment for healthcare providers, measure their vital signs, and record pertinent information in the patient's medical record.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, and physician instructions to patients, organizing materials to reinforce patient education.
  • Perform general office duties, such as answering phones, while acting as a liaison with other departments and advocating for patients with a positive customer service approach.
  • Collect laboratory specimens, log them, and hand deliver them for testing.
  • Responsible for improving appropriate departmental quality initiatives, such as two patient identifiers and hand hygiene.

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Associate's Degree Medical Assisting preferred

  • Basic Life Support [BLS Certification]
  • Certified Medical Assistant [National Certification

Experience

Direct MA experience or medical field work 1-2 years required

  • Ability to prioritize tasks in complex and busy environments.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal privacy and confidentiality rules and regulations.
  • Ability to take vital signs and manual blood pressure, as well as collect laboratory specimens.
  • Ability to perform EKG preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and protocols.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical office software.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Managing one's own time and the time of others.
