Job Description

Job Title: Mental Health Clinician

Reports to: Director of Clinical Services

Type: Full-Time Salary Range: $60,000-$75,000

Category: Mental Health

Background on UTEC

UTEC is a youth development and social justice organization. The mission is to ignite and nurture the ambition of young adults to trade violence and poverty for social and economic success. We are dedicated to helping young people ages 18-25 in the communities of Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill Massachusetts overcome the very real challenges of interrupted education, gang involvement, and incarceration. We believe that: If young adults who are caught up in the school-to-prison pipeline are productively engaged in UTEC activities and supports for an extended period during the critical ages of 18-25, then by 25, they will have the skills and resilience they need to pursue their dreams and avoid further involvement in the criminal justice system. For more info, please visitwww.utecinc.org.

UTEC strongly encourages applications from people of color, individuals with lived experience in the criminal legal system, and those from other historically underrepresented communities, including those most impacted by violence and economic inequity.Job Summary

Based at our Lowell office and nearby sites, you’ll provide trauma-informed individual and small-group counseling to young adults ages 17–25 from Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill, many of whom are navigating the effects of trauma, mental health challenges, or substance use. You'll support intake and screening, conduct assessments, provide crisis intervention, and facilitate external referrals as needed. You'll also collaborate with our Mental Health Team ‘behind the walls’, in correctional settings, to support young adults’ full reentry journeys.

At UTEC, we don’t bill insurance, giving you the freedom to take a flexible, relationship-centered approach to care—meeting young people where they are and focusing on what each individual truly needs without the paperwork or limitations of traditional systems.

You’ll work closely with a collaborative team of Transitional Coaches, Workforce Development staff, Reentry Programming specialists, and others to provide holistic, wraparound support.

This is an ideal opportunity for a clinician who’s passionate about equity and second chances—and who values work-life balance. Enjoy a consistent Monday–Friday schedule (typically no nights/weekends, minimal home visits), along with robust support for licensure and professional development.

Reasons to Love this Role

  • Career advancement: For those with a Master’s degree in social work or mental health counseling and pursuing licensure, we offer full supervision, exam support, professional development funding, and mentoring – a robust foundation for advancing into an experienced leader in the clinical field.
  • Deep impact & mission-driven work: In this role, you’ll have the chance to build meaningful, long-term relationships with young adults and support them through some of the most pivotal moments in their lives. Your work will go far beyond clinical care—you’ll be part of a healing-centered environment that helps young people break cycles of incarceration, access opportunity, and build brighter futures.
  • Work-life balance: You’ll be working a Monday-Friday schedule – a rare and welcomed structure in clinical roles that supports true work-life balance. Typical hours will be 9-5, but at minimal times may vary. You will also enjoy a  full week off between the Christmas and New Year holidays, a minimum of three weeks vacation per year, and 3 pm early closure on Summer Fridays. After 3 years on staff, UTEC employees are also offered a paid three-week sabbatical with up to $1,500 in related expenses.
  • Office & Community Centers: You’re based at UTEC’s site locations, with minimal home visits. Some work will take place in correctional facilities, bringing clinical care to young adults at the start of their reentry journeys.
  • Strong DEI culture: Work within an organization committed to anti-racist structures, honoring lived experience, and fostering growth through reflection and collaboration.
  • Compensation & Benefits: The Mental Health Clinician salary range is $60,000-$75,000. UTEC offers a competitive benefits package that starts with 3 weeks of vacation plus a week off between the Christmas and New Year holidays, 12 holidays, 10 sick days, 2 personal days, and 3 bereavement days, as well as health, dental, and vision insurance starting day one. We also offer life insurance, first-time homeowners down payment assistance, cost-of-living increases, a paid sabbatical after three years, and a 401K retirement plan with up to $2,000 savings match. Education and Experience

  • Clinical Licensure or License-Eligible: Master’s degree in social work or mental health counseling; Holds, or is on track to receiving, valid license such as LMHC or LCSW
  • Experience with the population that UTEC serves: Some youth work experience preferred (doesn't have to be in a clinical setting); experience with justice-involved youth is a plus
