MEP Commissioning Engineer Lead mission-critical building systems from design to occupancy on high-impact projects.Salary: Up to $130,000/yearLocation: Birmingham, ALIndustry: Government / Defense / EnergyEmployment Type: Permanent (no C2C or 1099)Overview:Join an established, employee-owned engineering and energy consulting organization with more than 30 years of experience helping clients optimize building performance, improve reliability, and reduce operating costs across complex facilities. - Lead the full commissioning lifecycle for complex projects, from design review through functional testing, integrated systems testing, and occupancy
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, schedules, test procedures, and integrated test matrices
- Plan, direct, and perform functional performance testing for HVAC systems, central plants, electrical distribution, emergency power systems, fire alarm, smoke control, and plumbing systems
- Lead integrated testing scenarios involving emergency power, life safety, BAS, and system interlocks under simulated conditions
- Perform design and document reviews to identify coordination gaps, commissioning risks, and testability issues early
- Observe installation of major equipment to verify readiness, accessibility, and compliance prior to testing
- Conduct root cause analysis for complex, cross-discipline system issues using field investigation, BAS trends, and testing data
- Clearly document deficiencies and corrective actions, distinguishing between design, construction, and operational issues
- Prepare clear, accurate commissioning reports, deficiency logs, and closeout documentation
- Chair commissioning meetings with owners, designers, contractors, and testing agencies
- Serve as a technical resource to clients and internal teams throughout project execution
- Bachelor s degree required; Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred
- U.S. citizenship and ability to pass required background investigations
- 7+ years of experience commissioning commercial and institutional facilities, including central plant HVAC, electrical distribution, emergency power, and integrated life safety systems
- Strong knowledge of commissioning processes, system performance testing, and integrated building systems
- Ability to identify issues early, troubleshoot effectively, and communicate technical findings clearly
- Strong client-facing communication and project leadership skills
- Willingness to travel approximately 35% as project needs require
