Job Description

St. Luke’s School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12, seeks a Middle School Art Teacher. 

The successful candidate will be an inspiring and collaborative artist and educator who is eager to apply their strengths to sparking the creative expression of our youngest artists and promoting the appreciation and value of art in the community. 

The Visual Arts program at St. Luke inhabits an environment that is tailor-made for artistic exploration. The 2018 completion of our new Arts & Humanities wing resulted in stunning classrooms that look south through floor-to-ceiling windows into the woods of a serene Connecticut landscape. Dedicated Visual Arts studios occupy three floors, including pottery kilns and a darkroom photography studio; the adjacent St. Luke’s designLab is a 4000+ sq ft digital and physical fabrication lab which has fueled numerous collaborative arts projects; and our Art Gallery has showcased the resulting work of students, faculty, and visiting artists. The St. Luke’s Educator Competencies form the foundation of our professional work, and the school’s  Strategic Plan provides overall direction.  

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach a full-time course load that is the equivalent of four Middle School Art classes. 
  • Note that candidates with interest may be eligible to include 1 or 2 sections of Middle School Leadership Skills in the course load.   
  • Help lead or assist in an after-school activity for three seasons (e.g., coaching athletics).
  • Serve as co-advisor/homeroom teacher for a group of 8-14 students..
  • Assist with supervisory and other duties as assigned, such as recess and chaperoning events. 

Key Skills and Qualities:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ classroom teaching experience
  • Desire to work with middle school students ages 10-14
  • Strong knowledge of art curriculum and pedagogy 
  • An inspiring, creative, innovative classroom teaching practice
  • Adaptability in supporting individual students’ needs and interests
  • Commitment to collaboration with colleagues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong cultural competency skills, with demonstrated commitment to furthering an equitable and inclusive school community 
  • Eagerness to develop student agency through meaningful learning experiences
  • Dedication to cultivating a sense of belonging in students by building trusting relationships 
  • Experience providing clear and actionable feedback to students, grounded in a growth mindset
  • Desire to continue growing professionally 

Candidates who advance in the interview process should be able to provide lesson plans and a portfolio of assignments that reflect current research-supported educational practices.
