Summary:
CICONIX is seeking a Museum Specialist (Photography) to support the National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) in Silver Spring, MD.
.
About the Role:
  • Worksindependently withrequester in planningand layingout photographic detail and delivers final photographic work products that meets or exceeds industry standards, government regulations and guidance concerning imaging of museum objects, and processing maintenance of associated metadata.
  • Focused on museum collections photography and takes guidance and direction from relevant staff, specifically the Staff Curator.
  • Independently completes photographic processes in their entirety.
  • Respondstorequestsforimageryfrombothinternalandexternalsourcesanduses their own subject matter expertise to deliver the optimal product(s) to the requester in a timely manner.
  • Basedonconditions,selectsappropriatecamera-filmcombinationsforsubjectinvolved.
  • Selectslightingeffects(e.g.polarized,stroboscopic,multipleflash.availablelight),reflectorsand filters to produce the desired results.
  • Consultswithcuratorsaboutartifacthandlingbeforeimaginganartifact.
  • Positionssubjectsand/orobjectswithregardtoforegroundandbackgrounds.
  • Discusseswhateffectsoremphasisisdesiredwithbothadministrativeandtechnicalpersonnelin ordertoplaceproperemphasisonparticularportionsand/orpresentatrueperspectiveoftheunit.
  • Works independently, with and without the requester, conceiving, planning and completing finishedproduct,usingtraditionalphotographyandelectronicimagingtogainrequiredeffect.
  • Takedocumentaryphotographsofmuseumartifactsandexhibits.
  • Takesconditionreportphotographsofmuseumartifactsgoingoutonloanorexhibit.
  • Providephotographicsupportformuseumevents.
  • Processanddisseminateimagesasdirected.
  • Respondstorequesttoprovidephotographicproductsfrominternalorexternalsourcesforusein graphic illustrations, posters and brochures.
  • Preparesexhibition-qualitymaterialsdesignedtoeducate,motivate,recognizeandor supplement/enhance meetings, seminars and conventions.
  • Effectivelyusescontrastingshapes,textureshapes,mountingtechniquesandlightingtostimulate and retain the interest of the target audience.
  • Utilizesanddevelopstechniquesforadaptingandextendingpresentequipmentandprocessesin order to meet unprecedented situations.
  • Operatesawiderangeofstillcamerasandauxiliarylightingequipmenttophotographevolving technical programs, under laboratory, field and studio conditions.
  • Researchprogramsubjectmatterandrequesterrequirements,explaininggenerallimitationsof photographic techniques and practices.
  • Performsspecializedstillphotographicreportingtasks.
  • Performsawiderangeofphotographicassignmentscoveringvariousresearchanddevelopment activities.
  • Monitorsandreviewsrelevantgovernmentandindustryregulations,guidanceandprovides subject matter expertise to museum personnel.
  • Providessubjectmatterexpertisetoallareasofmuseummission,whenrequested.
  • Attendsregularmeetings,orattendsothermeetingsasneededordirected.
  • Thispositionisexpectedtoworksomeweekendsandevenings.

Qualifications:
  • Education:
    • High School Diploma required.
  • Experience:
    • Three (3) - Five (5) years of experience.
  • Security & Background Check:
    • U.S. Citizenship and a successful background investigation are required.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance. 
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Willingness to comply with the government vaccination requirements.
