Job Description

The Network Engineer II provides Tier 3 engineering and operational support for the Indian Health Service (IHS) enterprise network as part of a 24x7 Network Operations & Support Center (NOSC). This role is responsible for maintaining reliable, secure, and compliant network services across a large WAN and multiple data centers, supporting hundreds of geographically distributed sites. The engineer troubleshoots complex incidents, performs configuration changes and upgrades, coordinates with telecommunications and hardware vendors, and produces required documentation and reporting in accordance with ITIL processes and Federal security standards. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced routing, switching, WAN, and wireless network incidents and performance issues.
  • Configure and support enterprise network infrastructure, including Cisco-based routing/switching platforms, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless systems.
  • Implement and maintain routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), QoS policies, and secure configuration baselines.
  • Monitor network health using enterprise tools; analyze events, logs, and traffic flows to identify root causes.
  • Support circuit management and coordinate with telecommunications vendors for provisioning and issue resolution.
  • Execute configuration changes and upgrades in accordance with change management processes.
  • Maintain accurate network documentation, diagrams, and operational reports.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal security standards (e.g., NIST, FISMA, STIGs) and support vulnerability remediation.
  • Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with network design, modernization efforts, and new technology deployments (e.g., SD-WAN, cloud connectivity).

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience supporting enterprise networks (WAN/data center environments).
  • Strong hands-on experience with Cisco routing and switching technologies.
  • Working knowledge of OSPF, BGP, and IPsec VPNs.
  • Experience with network monitoring, troubleshooting, and analysis tools.
  • Ability to work in a 24x7 operations environment with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Public Trust clearance.

Certifications:

  • CCNP required

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with SD-WAN, Palo Alto or Cisco Firepower security platforms, and cloud networking (Azure/AWS).

Background in healthcare or regulated environments.

Scripting/automation experience (Python, PowerShell).

Experience developing network diagrams and technical documentation.
