Nocturnal Hospitalist (Hospital Medicine Physician)Located at Heywood Hospital7 on/7 off*Additional quality bonus opportunityJob SummaryThe Hospitalist provides comprehensive inpatient medical care to hospitalized patients across medical units, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered care. The Hospitalist is responsible for the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of adult patients from admission through discharge, while supporting hospital quality initiatives, care coordination, and patient safety.Hospitalists serve as a key member of the inpatient care team, working closely with nursing staff, specialists, case management, and hospital leadership to ensure safe and effective care transitions and optimal patient outcomes.Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Care

  • Provide comprehensive inpatient medical care including patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
  • Perform admission history and physical examinations in accordance with medical staff documentation standards.
  • Manage hospitalized patients throughout the course of their admission, including daily rounding and medical decision-making.
  • Provide consultations for Emergency Department admissions when requested.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, procedures, and laboratory studies as clinically appropriate.
  • Develop and communicate clear, evidence-based treatment plans and orders.
  • Coordinate care with specialty consultants when patients require services beyond the hospitalist scope of practice.
  • Provide medical co-management for surgical patients as appropriate.
Care Coordination & Transitions
  • Coordinate patient care across interdisciplinary teams including nursing, pharmacy, case management, and therapy services.
  • Facilitate safe and timely discharge planning, including communication with outpatient providers and arranging follow-up care.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
Team Collaboration
  • Supervise and collaborate with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) as part of the hospital medicine team.
  • Work closely with hospital staff and leadership to maintain high standards of patient care and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and care coordination activities.
Clinical Quality and Performance
  • Support hospital quality initiatives including mortality reduction, readmission prevention, and patient safety programs.
  • Contribute to improvement of key performance metrics such as length of stay, discharge efficiency, and care coordination.
  • Utilize evidence-based clinical guidelines and hospital protocols to support consistent, high-quality care.
  • Participate in clinical review, peer review, and quality improvement activities as appropriate.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with nursing leadership, case management, pharmacy, and therapy teams to coordinate patient care.
  • Work closely with Emergency Department staff to ensure efficient admissions and appropriate patient placement.
  • Support a culture of teamwork and professional communication across hospital departments.
Program Participation
  • Participate in hospital medicine program meetings, provider meetings, and designated hospital committees.
  • Contribute to program development initiatives aimed at improving clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, and provider engagement.
  • Assist in mentoring new providers and supporting onboarding efforts when appropriate.
Patient Experience
  • Promote patient-centered care through clear communication with patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
  • Support hospital efforts to improve patient satisfaction and patient experience metrics.
Documentation & Compliance
  • Complete accurate and timely medical documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure appropriate coding and documentation practices that support compliant billing and reimbursement.
  • Maintain all required licensure, certifications, and hospital credentialing requirements.
Operational Efficiency
  • Support hospital throughput initiatives including efficient admissions, timely discharges, and coordination of care transitions.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital leadership to address operational challenges impacting patient flow.

Education & Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
  • Eligible for or currently holding an unrestricted medical license in the applicable state.
  • DEA registration (or eligibility) required.
Work Environment
  • Hospitalists are part of a team providing 24-hour inpatient medical coverage, typically working structured clinical schedules in collaboration with other physicians and advanced practice providers.
