Job Description

Controller

Position: ControllerReports to: Chief Operating OfficerClassification: Salaried ExemptLocation: Fort Worth, TX (Hybrid – 3 days onsite / 2 days remote)Schedule: 35 hours per weekCompensation: $130,000 – $140,000

Position Summary

Our client is seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller to lead the organization's accounting and finance operations. This individual will be responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and analysis, maintaining strong internal controls, overseeing budgeting and cash management activities, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Board-approved investment policies. The Controller will play a key role in supporting leadership with financial insights and strategic decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Maintain and continually improve documented accounting policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the accounting department while ensuring departmental goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger and all financial records.

Transaction Management

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, fixed assets, and journal entries.
  • Maintain a strong system of internal controls over accounting transactions.
  • Ensure the chart of accounts and accounting records are properly maintained.
  • Monitor cash flow and cash management activities.

Financial Reporting & Planning

  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Develop financial analyses and reports to support executive decision-making.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, forecasts, and long-range financial planning.
  • Prepare and present meaningful financial information to executive leadership.

Compliance & Audit

  • Coordinate the annual external audit and serve as the primary contact for auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with grant, endowment, and donor reporting requirements.
  • Oversee government reporting requirements and applicable tax filings.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and other applicable accounting standards.

Investment Oversight

  • Monitor investment performance and coordinate with outside investment managers.
  • Prepare investment reporting and financial analyses for leadership.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise three accounting professionals.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
  • Foster collaboration and accountability within the accounting team.
  • Promote continuous process improvements and operational efficiencies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA required.
  • Eight to ten years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience administering grants and endowments preferred.
  • Strong experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
  • Experience managing payroll administration.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing accounting staff and financial processes.
  • Ability to identify process deficiencies and implement effective solutions.

Preferred Skills

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with accounting software; ABILA MIP experience is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of fund accounting preferred.

  • Experience with accounting systems that support future organizational growth.

  • Ability to remain seated or stationary for extended periods, operate standard office equipment, navigate office facilities, and occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
