Nurse Clinical Pain Management Coordinator

Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Nurse Clinical Pain Management Coordinator is a clinical expert responsible for providing advanced consultation, assessment, and care recommendations for hospitalized patients experiencing complex pain management challenges. This role supports interdisciplinary teams in delivering safe, evidence based, and patient centered pain care, with a focus on improving outcomes, reducing risk, and promoting best practices across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive pain assessments for inpatients with complex, acute, chronic, or opioid‑related pain management needs.
  • Provide expert consultation to physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals regarding individualized pain management strategies.
  • Develop and recommend multimodal, evidence‑based pain management plans that support safety, functional improvement, and patient goals.
  • Identify patients at risk for opioid‑induced sedation, respiratory depression, or other complications and advise on appropriate monitoring and interventions.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support safe opioid prescribing, titration, tapering, and stewardship practices.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for nonpharmacologic pain management modalities and integrative therapies.
  • Participate in system‑wide initiatives related to pain management, opioid stewardship, patient safety, and quality improvement.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines related to pain management.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, providers, and learners on pain assessment, pharmacology, monitoring, and best practices using principles of teaching/learning and health literacy.
  • Support transitions of care by advising on safe discharge planning for patients with complex pain or opioid needs.
  • Monitor trends, outcomes, and practice gaps to inform program development and performance improvement efforts.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate
  • Bachelor Degree Nursing
  • 2 or more years RN experience

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master Degree Nursing

Required Licensure and Certification

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 14 days
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Single State - State Board of Nursing Registered Nurse in State of Kansas
  • Home Infusion Roles also require KDADS certification.

Preferred Licensure and Certification

  • As a condition of your employment and continued employment with the health system, you are required to secure a Nurse Compact License (NCL) within 60 days of your date of hire. This will enable you to perform your job duties not only in Kansas, but other compact states. You will be responsible for any expenses you incur in securing this license, and must provide your manager with evidence of this license before the sixty-day period expires. If you fail to secure the NCL as required, you will be immediately removed from the work schedule and placed on an unpaid administrative leave, until we can understand the reasons for your non-compliance. Further failure to comply with the licensing requirement will result in your end of employment with the health system.
