Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Ohana Medical Director and the Assistant Director of Outpatient Services, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing care to child & adolescent patients and their families with acute and chronic psychiatric disorders. Duties include the evaluation and treatments of patients including, but not limited to, performing initial and follow up psychiatric assessments; initiating, renewing, and changing medications; ordering routine laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests and providing initial interpretations of results; initiating or expediting requests for consultations, special tests or studies; evaluating and initiating therapy for acute and chronic mental health problems; providing education and training (individual or groups) to the patient, family & community as necessary; and communicating clinical findings to members of the clinical team. Dependent on program need, this position may also be performing duties in the Ohana IOP/PHP program, Residential Treatment Program, Crisis Stabilization Unit and Emergency Department. Duties also include documenting all findings and results in the medical record. In addition to clinical care the Ohana nurse practitioner will be available to work with the Ohana Leadership and Management on program development. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is expected to maintain a productivity expectation of at least 25 patient facing billable hours per week.

Important dimensions of this position consist of excellence in patient care through observation, assessment, nursing judgment, communication skills and interpersonal relations. Must have demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making ability and able to work independently.

Experience

Completion of postgraduate nurse practitioner fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry nursing strongly preferred. Minimum of two years working in child and adolescent psychiatric clinical setting required. Experience with dual diagnosis patients preferred. Must demonstrate a thorough and complete understanding of psychotropic medications, side effects, and drug/drug interactions.

Education

Master's Degree in Nursing required- Exception Nurse Practitioners' qualified or certified as an NP in California or any other state prior to January 1, 2008.

Licensure/Certifications

Must be currently licensed in California as an NP and be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners to practice in the State of California. State of California RN and Nurse Practitioner license with specialty certification in psychiatry. Certification from either ANCC or AANP as a nurse practitioner Furnishing license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing required. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required. Workplace Violence Prevention (AVADE) certification must be obtained within the first 6 months of hire. Will complete mandatory 5150 training by Monterey County to obtain 5150 certification and obtain 5150 Professional staff authorization yearly.

Live Scan fingerprint clearance required by the Department of Healthcare Services is a job requirement.
