Summary

The nurse scientist is an expert researcher, clinician and advocate in a particular specialty or subspecialty of nursing practice, providing leadership and consultation in the professional practice setting. The nurse scientist for research and evidenced-based practice (EBP) is an expert in methods and application of nursing research and evidence-based practice.

Job Description

Provides expert knowledge, skills and guidance in a specialized field related to nursing. Coordinates the integration of nursing research and innovation into patient care management. Facilitates evidence-based nursing outcomes, differentiating appropriate project or study methods related to performance/quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and/or research. Assesses a healthcare facility's nursing practice level of research integration and maturation, including the well-defined impact on patient outcomes. Identifies expected outcomes achievable through implementation of evidence-based practices. Uses outcome evaluation and analysis to make or recommend process or structural changes, including policy/procedure/protocol or technology-related practice changes. Provides consultative guidance, consistent with Magnet and American Nurses Credentialing Center guidelines, while serving as a nursing consultant, mentor, coach, researcher and educator. Systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice through research and EBP methods, and application of implementation science.Facilitates/collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams that contribute directly or indirectly to advance nursing practice, collaborative outcomes and health services. Develops evaluation strategies to demonstrate nursing and/or inter-professional impact on patient quality of care and safety, cost effectiveness, cost benefit, and efficiency.Evaluates the practice environment and quality of nursing care rendered in relation to existing evidence, identifying opportunities for innovation and application of research. Uses evidence from external peer-reviewed research and internal data to assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of innovative programs/practices, including population health for all ages, chronic conditions, developmental needs, cultural, or psychosocial needs. Acknowledges the impact of social determinants of health across populations. Incorporates evidence to expand knowledge, promote practice change, enhance nurse-sensitive outcomes and practice performance consistent with regulatory and accreditation guidelines. Formally disseminates findings of nursing inquiry through activities such as presentations, publications, consultations and journal clubs.Supports the nursing practice by serving on, and/or leading, hospital, community, and/or national committees. Ability to build/sustain committee/council infrastructure for nursing research-related activities. Ability to engage with vulnerable populations. Incorporates teaching/learning principles and adapts teaching to age groups. Mentors advanced degree nursing students and terminal projects, and collaborates with affiliated nursing schools across the nation.Possesses advanced communication, clinical assessment, intervention and evaluation knowledge, skills and attitudes consistent with the Nurse Specialist role definition by the National Association of clinical nurse specialists. Possesses basic knowledge of statistical analyses and quality control.Facilitates management and care for patients, including those with complex needs. Expert in assessing gaps in practice and facilitating original research or research translation and inquiry trials. Uses approved inquiry methods with well-defined, accessible and achievable outcomes that clearly impact nursing practice.Facilitates staff research and EBP competency requirements and learning needs. Develops and maintains nursing research infrastructure, including policies, procedures, objectives, or standards, based on up-to-date research, evidence-based guidelines or expert opinion. Maintains complete and detailed records of Nursing Research Council infrastructure and activities, as well as staff, and student, research studies and evidence-based projects.

Qualifications

Successful completion of a master’s, post-master’s or doctorate in nursing.Completion of a program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is preferred. Evidence of formal education in research methods, evidence-based practice models and implementation science preferred.Minimum five years’ of active experience in clinical service line and in evidenced-based inquiry and nursing research. Demonstrated current competence and experience with evidence-based practice methods, including grading and synthesizing evidence, and project completion. Experience with nursing research quantitative and qualitative methods and appropriate evaluation strategies/techniques. Demonstrates basic data management skills including spreadsheets and basic statistics. Experience in program management such as population health for specific populations.Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.Preferred certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or an equivalent body as applicable to specialty area of practice. Current licensure by the applicable state. Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances, if prescriptive privileges are sought.
