Job Description

We are looking for an Operations Engineer to join our team!

We're seeking an Operations Engineer to be an inspired and safety-focused contributor to our Engineering team, supporting distribution system analysis, planning, and capital improvements to enhance customer service through storm-hardened construction as well as customer/developer-facing interconnection work. You'll help integrate solar, storage, EV infrastructure, and other DERs safely and reliably onto the distribution grid while balancing system performance, standards, and operational needs. You'll use your engineering judgment and experience, system modeling, and cross-functional collaboration skills to deliver timely interconnection decisions and grid solutions that benefit all GMP customers.

What you'll do

DER Interconnections

  • Technical review of DER interconnection requests (e.g., solar , storage, EVSE, microgrids, CHP), including application screening and feasibility assessment.
  • Perform distribution impact studies (as needed): thermal loading, voltage/voltage regulation, protection coordination studies, power quality impacts / analysis, and define operational constraints. Present mitigation options to stakeholders to determine the most appropriate path forward.
  • Issue interconnection requirements (e.g., equipment upgrades, voltage regulation settings changes, fusing and recloser setting modifications, telemetry/communications requirements, operating guidelines) as finalize with stakeholders
  • Partner with internal stakeholders (Planning, Engineering, and various Field Operation disciplines) to align on interconnection & internal schedules, and communicate commissioning requirements.

Distribution engineering & grid solutions

  • Maintain and improve distribution system models in GIS / CYME to support evolving distribution system analysis needs.
  • Contribute to feeder-level planning and targeted reliability/capacity improvements driven by generation, load, and flexible DER growth at growing adoption levels with an increasing focus on contingency switching operations while also adhering to applicable standards and codes (e.g. NESC, NEC, and applicable IEEE standards).
  • Leverage data-driven insights (queue trends, upgrade drivers, constraint mapping) to develop repeatable engineering approaches, templates, and decision frameworks that improve cycle time and consistency for all Distribution System analysis processes.

What we're looking for

This position requires electrical power experience, an engineering degree, and the ability to work independently and safely to prioritize tasks to meet goals and deadlines. Successful teammates are forward-thinking and embrace technology and collaboration across multiple teams. They also have the communication skills to work effectively and build relationships with many stakeholders, balancing multiple changing priorities to meet customers' needs.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience aligned to distribution engineering / DER integration).
  • Working knowledge of electric distribution systems (three-phase and single-phase), voltage regulation concepts, and common utility equipment (transformers, regulators, capacitors, switching/protection devices).
  • Comfort working with engineering analysis tools and datasets
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to deliver successful projects.
  • Ability to communicate technical requirements clearly to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with DER interconnection processes and/or distribution studies (screening, feasibility, impact assessments).
  • Experience with performing load flows and protection coordination studies.
  • Experience with contingency switching (N-0, N-1) and evaluation of impacts of various feeder configurations.
  • Familiarity with relevant interconnection standards and concepts (e.g., IEEE 1547 / inverter-based resources, protection impacts, power quality considerations).
  • Experience with distribution analysis tools (e.g., CYME, Synergi, DEW, Milsoft, OpenDSS, ETAP) and GIS/work management systems.
  • EIT and/or PE (or progress toward licensure).
  • Experience with developing requirements and/or integrating telemetry/controls with advanced inverters to meet various distribution system requirements and bulk system markets.

Location

Can be either our Rutland or Colchester, Vermont office.
