We are looking for an Ophthalmic Technician for our Testing department who shares our core values and is ready to make a meaningful impact.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to perform diagnostic tests on ophthalmic/optometric patients to provide images and other data used by clinicians in their work to diagnose vision problems and apply corrective treatments/solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet patients, verify identity, and confirm the reason for visit and testing orders.
- Review provider orders and protocols to determine which imaging or diagnostic tests are required.
- Perform basic ophthalmic imaging such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual field testing, fundus photography, and corneal topography according to clinic protocols.
- Conduct preliminary testing including visual acuity, autorefraction, intraocular pressure measurement (e.g., iCare, non-contact tonometry), and pupil assessment when appropriate.
- Position patients correctly at imaging devices and provide clear instructions to obtain high-quality, reliable images.
- Calibrate and set up imaging and testing equipment at the start of the day; perform basic troubleshooting when issues arise.
- Ensure all images and test results are properly labeled, saved, and linked to the correct patient in the electronic medical record or imaging system.
- Review image quality, repeat tests when needed, and notify the provider of any significant or urgent findings observed during testing.
- Maintain cleanliness and disinfection of equipment, chin rests, forehead rests, and testing areas between patients following infection control protocols.
- Monitor patient comfort and safety during testing, assisting patients with mobility or positioning needs.
- Coordinate the testing schedule to keep patient flow on time, coordinating with technicians, scribes, and providers.
- Communicate effectively with providers and other staff about completed tests, pending studies, and any testing limitations.
- Maintain adequate inventory of testing-related supplies (e.g., printer paper, chin rest paper, wipes) and report equipment or supply needs to the supervisor.
- Participate in ongoing training to stay current on new imaging protocols, device software updates, and practice standards.
Qualifications
- Experience in healthcare is preferred but not required.
- Customer service experience is required.
