Job Description

JOB TITLE: OR Tech

Salary Range: $18.00 - $21.00, based on skill and experience level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: OR Tech will perform nursing-related duties in providing for personal and environment for patients across the perioperative care continuum. The OR Tech will work in a structured environment under the supervision of the Director of Nursing. The OR Tech will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care in accordance with the standards of care of the facility, following the approved policies and procedures.

The OR Tech performs duties as above when needed, but primarily involved in team assistance to include room turnovers, sterile supply management, case cart preparation, assisting with quarterly inventory, and perform patient care activities under the direction of registered nurses. OR Tech provides assistance to surgeon with retracting for total joint surgical cases.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Nursing

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BLS Certified
  • Cooperative work attitude toward and with co-employees, management, patients, visitors and physicians, and ability to communicate with others effectively and respectfully.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in the perioperative setting scrubbing and assisting under the supervision of surgeon, PA/RNFA and RN

RESPONSIBILTIES:

I. GENERAL CLEANING DUTIES

A. Assist with operating room turnover, cleans the operating rooms and surgical equipment as assigned after surgery using universal precautions according to the standards of practice.

B. Performs various general cleaning duties to maintain surgical suite in a clean and orderly manner.

C. Performs all assigned errands and duties promptly.

D. Sets up mop buckets.

E. Terminally cleans special equipment

F. Collects soiled lined from the ORs, and Preop/PACU areas

II. RESTOCKING DUTIES

A. Assist with the stocking of supplies in the peri-anesthesia and perioperative areas.

B. Restocks the ORs with supplies.

C. Refill the blanket warmer and fluid warmer as needed throughout the day.

D. Assists with inventory quarterly per policy.

E. Assists with checking outdates monthly.

F. Properly returns sterile supplies and equipment using appropriate precautions to maintain sterility.

G. Restocks clean supply room when deliveries arrive.

H. Restocks scrub sinks and cabinets (mask, brushes, booties, soaps, etc…)

I. Restock Neptunes manifolds, and dock neptunes to run washes nightly/(weekly long cycle).

III. PATIENT CARE DUTIES

A. Maintains BLS certification.

B. Practices aseptic hand washing according to CDC policy and guidelines.

C. Demonstrates knowledge of how to maintain a sterile field; supervised by surgeon, PA/RNFA and RN.

D. Assist with patient positioning, lifting and/or transferring in perioperative area

E. Assist with patient care as needed in PACU after OR cases are complete

F. Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to patient and family rights, as identified by the hospital, and in compliance with HIPPA

G. Understands the protocol for responding to emergency situations.

H. Assists in surgery with retracting, under direct supervision of surgeon.

I. Demonstrates proficiency with setting up medical equipment safely

J. Assist with transport of patients after discharge as needed

IV. GENERAL DUTIES

A. Participates in staff meetings, in-service programs and educational requirements as appropriate.

B. Communicates all pertinent information, including findings, problems, concerns or ideas to the assigned nurse, utilizing appropriate lines of authority, in a timely and effective manner.

C. Seeks guidance and assistance from the assigned nurse or Team Lead when knowledge base and skill level is in question.

D. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of universal precautions, infection control and isolation procedures. At all times, adheres to the Facility policies and procedures and scope of practice.

E. Other duties as assigned.

L. Reads and adheres to policies stated in Policy Stat.

M. Utilizes performance evaluation as a guide for self-improvement.

N. Uses constructive criticism to effect positive change in behavior.

O. Maintains current on Healthstream and self-evaluation activities
