Orthopedic Technician, OPA Lake Otis, Full-Time - Anchorage, Alaska

Orthopedic Physicians Alaska (OPA) seeks a highly skilled, dedicated and professional Orthopedic Technician to join our rapidly growing and dynamic team. General Summary: Orthopedic technicians collaborate closely with physicians to apply and remove plaster and synthetic casts, as well as fabricate splints and semi-custom thermoplastic braces. They assist patients with mobility aids such as canes and crutches, ensuring proper fit and adjustment. Additionally, they educate patients on treatment risks following wound care, casting, splinting, or the use of durable medical equipment (DME).

Representative duties• Performs splinting, casting, and application of simple traction, braces and other devices under the direction of an orthopedic physician or physician assistant.• Performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an orthopedic technologist and specific training, assisting orthopedic physician with dressing changes, suture and pin removal, incision and drainage, reducing fractures, etc.• Educate patients and staff regarding proper care and use of orthopedic appliances.• Document the care administered.• Monitor and order all casting, clinical, DME, and patient supplies including instruments• Clean, autoclave and properly package surgical instruments.• Orient and provide on-the-job training in casting and splinting to resident physicians and staff.

Knowledge and skill requirements

Knowledge:• Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures.• Knowledge of specific task assistance related to medical practice.• Knowledge of sterile technique and orthopedic supplies.

Skills:• Skill in diplomacy and tact in interpersonal interactions.• Ability to effectively share information with patients and families.• Skilled in the application of casting, splinting, and veritable orthopedic appliances

Abilities:• Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.• Ability to project a pleasant and professional image.• Ability to plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks.• Ability to demonstrate compassion with others.

Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)

Preferred Experience: Medical Assistant or Orthopedic Technology certificate or related associate's degree
