Organization's Summary Statement:

The Physical Plant Department invites applications for a full-time, nonexempt position with benefits

Under general supervision, performs painting work at the journey level. Prepares surfaces for painting, plasters and/or paints building interiors, exteriors, road and parking surfaces.

Responsibilities:

  • Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect

interior or exterior surfaces.

  • Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, sandpapering or dissolving

previous paint coatings. Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk or putty.

Tapes, spackles, and finishes dry wall.

  • Removes fixtures, spreads drop cloths and covers surfaces to protect during

painting.

  • Selects, mixes, and matches paints.
  • Stains and finishes furniture, paints and touches up signs and may hang wall

coverings.

  • Prepares estimates of time, labor and materials. Prepares reports reflecting

daily operations and project status.

  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment of the painting trade. May erect

and work from scaffolding and ladders. Cleans work area upon completion of

project.

  • Provides guidance and training in painting work to other maintenance

personnel. May have lead responsibility for special projects.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Four years progressively responsible experience in the painting trade.
  • A non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of

Maryland may be required.

  • Note: The selected candidate may be required to be trained to work with

asbestos.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques used in

the painting trade.

  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume,

weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and

proportions: of OSHA regulations related to the painting trade.

  • Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the painting

trade.

  • Ability to schedule and lay out work and to perceive the normal color spectrum.
  • Ability to prepare summaries and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to

work from ladders, rigging, and scaffolding.

  • Ability to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force

up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and

machinery.

  • Ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and

adverse weather or temperature conditions.

Physical Demands:

  • May be required to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting.
  • May be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • May be required to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
  • May be required to operate a variety of equipment to include office equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years progressively responsible experience in the painting trade.
