ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists Town Attorney and Assistant Town Attorneys with various paraprofessional tasks. Responsible for timely contract drafting and complex legal document preparation for attorney review.
- Supports Legal Operations with a variety of complex administrative tasks including but not limited to budget tracking, DocuSign routing, Legal Files management, contract template management, and general legal operations.
- Assists in the preparation and revision of contracts. Conducts legal research to ensure legal instruments are in compliance with applicable laws, codes and regulations. Assists in discovery preparation and coordination with outside counsel as needed.
- Prepares complex real estate documents including purchase/sale agreements, easements, encroachment permits/agreements, conveyance documents, deeds and requests for release of deeds of trust. Coordinates and monitors Town real estate transactions, including title examination and appraisal coordination. May serve as Town representative at real estate closings.
- Researches Municipal Code for attorneys and assists in preparation of comprehensive Municipal Code drafting.
- Conducts legal research and analysis utilizing resources including federal, state, and local statues, codes, regulations, and case law. Advises Town Attorney and Assistant Town Attorney(s) of findings and recommendations.
- Performs lead legal work such as, providing task instruction, assists employees with difficult/unusual legal assignments, determines work priorities, serves as a mentor to others and resolves problems encountered during daily operations with the ability to determines appropriate solutions.
- Provides support in answering phones and responding to internal and external emails. May serve as department representative in various meetings. Serves as a point of contract to resolve issues and provide follow-up as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school or possession of GED Equivalent. An Associate's degree in a related field is preferred.
Experience: Three to five (3-5) years of paralegal experience in public or private law office; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses and/or certifications:
- Paralegal Certification is required or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational skills to effectively plan, prioritize, organize, coordinate, collaborate and complete multiple projects and requests with stringent deadlines.
- Ability to prepare a variety of complex legal documents, agreements and contracts.
- Ability to prepare complex real estate documents including but not limited to purchase/sale agreements, easements, encroachment permits/agreements, conveyance documents, deeds and requests for release of deeds of trust.
- Understanding of legal concepts related to municipal government, including subpoenas, court filings, and case specific deadlines.
- Ability to accurately summarize discussions, glean most important aspects, and clearly and concisely draft into agreements.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, including the ability to communicate effectively with upset customers.
- Ability to perform legal research and analysis of federal, state and local statues, codes, regulations, and case law.
- Ability to work independently and take appropriate initiative on legal matters.
- Knowledge of municipal processes regarding resolutions and ordinances.
- Advanced skill in use of Microsoft Office applications, legal case management software.
- Familiarity with Westlaw.
- Ability to utilize the computer/Internet/computer software for conducting legal research.
- Ability to maintain integrity of confidential information.
Physical Demands:
- Sedentary work for long periods of time.
Work Environment:
- Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment
- Primarily on-site. The Town Attorney's Office may offer the opportunity to work a hybrid schedule. Hybrid work arrangements are subject to change based on business needs
Equipment Used:
- Uses standard office equipment including a personal computer system
- This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
