Job Description:

A veterinarian enrolled in a doctoral program (PhD) in the Department of Pathobiological Sciences and who is, concurrently, a resident in veterinary parasitology, with the aim of certification through the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (parasitology specialty).

The incumbent will have a 50% FTE dedication to teaching duties in veterinary parasitology, including classroom or lab teaching and preparation for teaching. The remaining 50% will be dedicated to research lab hours and coursework.

Job Responsibilities:

40%- Teaching: parasitology labs in DVM curriculum (maintenance of equipment, supplies, and parasite specimens for labs, and leading labs and lab instruction), parasitology didactic teaching in DVM curriculum, support of graduate student teaching, undergraduate student teaching, and support of outreach activities.

40%- Research: performs research in the current projects of the PI, with a focus on dissertation research, conducts data storage and data analysis, contributes to manuscripts and strives toward the goal of first authorship, contributes to grant writing, attends conferences and presents abstracts, presents seminars as required for doctoral program, and maintains proper records, supervises or co-supervises undergraduate and DVM students on an ad hoc basis for small research projects, including assisting with Summer Scholars projects.

15%- Residency service: performs activities related to obtaining proficiency as a specialist veterinary parasitologist. The aim is for the candidate to prepare to sit the certification (board) exam in the parasitology specialty of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists. Conducts parasitology diagnostic tests and assays, becomes proficient in morphological identification of parasite specimens and eggs, oocysts, and cysts, conducts wet preps, fecal flotations, sedimentations, Baermanns, coprocultures, ELISAs, and Knott's tests, extracts DNA and conducts PCR, advises clinicians in managing parasitology cases, advises veterinarians and farmers in the conduct of anthelmintic resistance diagnosis, rotates through LADDL and other parasitology reference labs.

5%- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

DVM or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

DVM and keen interest in veterinary parasitology and desire to attain board certification in the parasitology specialty of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.

Previous experience in parasitology is preferred (e.g., master's degree).

Molecular biology experience is preferred (e.g., PCR).

Special and Physical Qualifications:

Requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching (above shoulder), reaching (below shoulder), vision (near sight), vision (far sight), pushing/pulling, squatting, and lifting less than 50 pounds.

Expected to work after hours including nights, weekends, and holidays to complete research. Able to discuss cases with veterinarians and/or owners via phone or in person.
