Position Summary The Family Advocate provides trauma-informed support to families residing in a confidential shelter. This role emphasizes children’s services, supporting children who witness domestic violence, and facilitating family bonding activities to strengthen parent-child relationships. Advocates also assist adult survivors with safety planning, emotional support, and access to community resources.
Key Responsibilities
Provide emotional support and crisis intervention for adult survivors.
Offer age-appropriate support and activities for children impacted by domestic violence.
Facilitate daily play groups for children who witness domestic violence to promote social-emotional development and coping skills.
Organize and guide family bonding activities to strengthen parent-child relationships.
Assist residents with shelter procedures and access to community resources.
Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of services.
Collaborate with Shelter Coordinators and other staff to ensure integrated care for families.
Participate in training to maintain knowledge of trauma-informed, child-centered advocacy practices.
Qualifications
High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s in Social Work, Human Services, or related field preferred.
Experience with domestic violence, child services, or advocacy preferred.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care and child development.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to work part-time evenings (3:30 PM – 7:30 PM).
Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics.
Working Conditions
Shelter-based, fast-paced environment with direct interaction with survivors and children.
Part-time hours only; no on-call rotation.
