A day in the life…

Wondering what a day in the life of a Pathology Associate II at The Iowa Clinic might look like?

  • Accession and document specimens received in the laboratory, ensuring proper labeling and tracking.
  • Perform gross dissection and description of routine specimens, including biopsies and surgical specimens.
  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance programs to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Monitor and address discrepancies in specimen identification or processing.
  • Operate and maintain grossing station equipment, including cutting tool and scales.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment and workstation regularly to prevent contamination.
  • Notify the lead histotechnologist of equipment malfunctions or supply shortages.
  • Adhere to regulatory standards for CLIA and institutional policies.
  • Work closely with pathologists, and histotechnologists to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Prepare cytology samples using techniques such as centrifugation, filtration, and smear preparation.
  • Perform testing of Thin Prep and other liquid based cytology specimens.
  • Perform staining procedures, including Papanicolaou (PAP) and other specialized stains, ensuring consistent and high-quality results.
  • Inspect prepared slides for quality and proper staining before submission for evaluation.
  • Perform all molecular testing under the supervision of the cytologist, maintaining inventory, troubleshooting and keeping all records up to date.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree that includes 30 semester hours of chemistry and biology (must include credit hours in both) or an associate degree that includes 12 semester hours of chemistry and biology (must include credit hours in both)

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a pathology laboratory or surgical grossing lab is preferred but not required
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow complex protocols and instructions accurately.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and basic computer applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to handle delicate specimens safely.
