Job Description

JOB DUTIES

Assists the nursing staff with the daily routine and functions of the nursing unit: ie transport, discharge, pass fresh water, personal hygiene, activities of daily living, check and pass meal tray, answer bells. Conduct hourly rounds on assigned patients. Reports pertinent observations, changes, and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate person.

Performs clerical duties related to the coordination of the unit and patient care.ie update bed status board, manage rental beds, track work orders, and notify physician consults. Provides clerical direction to new staff and/or students and volunteers. Confers with departments regarding scheduling of patient’s activities and procedures. Prepares and updates patient’s current records and records for transfer of patient. Obtains records according to policies and procedures. Answers the phone, interacts with ancillary departments to facilitate and ensure completion of patient testing, pages physicians, and completes transfers.

Effectively utilizes Meditech electronic health record.

Assists in the admission process.

Accurately collects and enters patient information.

Focus on patient safety through fall and restraint reduction.

Obtain vital signs, weight, height, intake and output, specimens, blood glucose, EKG’s and documents as appropriate.

Cognizant of and addresses patient’s level of comfort and pain management.

Expresses concern and understanding regarding patient and family satisfaction. Maintains unit and nursing station supplies – including completion of requisitions on time to ensure proper level of stock. Responsible for inventory and restocking of direct and indirect care items in all nursing units and patient rooms.

Maintains standards of nursing care within the guidelines of the nursing department by demonstrating knowledge of standards of nursing care when implementing plan of care.

Follows established charge procedure for patient charge items.

Screens patients, visitors, employees, and others upon entrance into buildings, as directed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 SPECIFIC JOB DEMANDS

Strength: Medium Work- Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling 20 - 50 Lbs. occasionally, 10 - 25 Lbs. frequently or up to 10 Lbs. constantly.

Stooping: Occasionally- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Reaching: Frequently- Extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

Handling: Frequently- Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand, such as to turn a switch or shift automobile gears.

Fingering: Frequently- Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Feeling: Frequently- Noting attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Talking: Frequently- Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing: Frequently- Perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.

Near Acuity: Frequently- Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Accommodation: Occasionally- Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This factor is required when doing near point work at varying distances from the eye.

Color Vision: Frequently- Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

High School graduate or equivalent within one year from date of hire.

EMT, Certified Nursing or Medical Assistant preferred.

Strong interpersonal communication skills.

Experience in data entry or typing preferred.

Previous clerical experience preferred.

Legible handwriting.

Through education, experience, and/or training, the individual is qualified to work with infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Fluent knowledge of medical terminology.

Current BLS Healthcare Provider card.

 WORKING CONDITIONS

Patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature changes. A large part of work time is standing and walking. Subject to certain distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases. May be exposed to potential hazards such as chemical wastes, body wastes, fluids and other possible infectious material.
