Position Title: Biological Technician Individual Placement – 680 HR

Position Summary:

The Payette National Forest (PNF) is recruiting one 680-hour (17 weeks) Biological Technician from June 1, 2026, through September 2026. The incumbent will be paired with a Forest Service Employee to identify, document, map, and treat noxious weed infestations. This position will typically work four ten-hour days per week (Monday through Thurs).

Duties and Responsibilities:

The individual placement will conduct field surveys to identify, document, map, and treat noxious weed infestations. The individual placement will collect data using GPS technology, collector and field maps. They will also assist in the maintenance and inspection of fences. Operates a variety of field equipment commonly used in treating, preventing, and eradicating noxious weeds such as all-terrain vehicles (ATV's), utility terrain vehicles (UTV's), herbicide application equipment, GPS equipment, and cameras. The individual placement's time will be spent inventorying, documenting and mapping noxious weeds (25%) – Treating noxious weeds (50%) – Inspecting Bull Trout fence exclosures (10%) - Maintaining fences (10%) – Miscellaneous work (5%).

Required Qualifications:

  • Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
  • U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
  • Must pass a background/driver check
  • Willingness to work as part of a small team and occasionally alone
  • Current driver's license.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30lbs
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
  • Individual Placement may travel to other duty stations during the work week and remain overnight occasionally

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience using GPS and GIS
  • Previous experience operating ATV's or UTV's.
  • Noxious weed and plant identification
  • Strong interest in resource management.
  • Personal transportation

Duty Location:

Duties are performed out of the Council Ranger District Council, Idaho. Housing is provided in bunkhouses with a common kitchen and shared bedrooms located in Council ID or Brownlee guard station located in Brownlee ID.

Terms of Employment:

One individual placement will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting June 1, 2026 through September for a total of 17 week (680 hours). The individual placement will average 40 hours of labor per week, minus holidays. Individual placements are responsible for providing their own personal transportation and food.

Program Benefits:

Individual placements will earn $10,880 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the 17 Weeks. The living allowance are taxable.
