Job Description
Payroll Processing Consultant Payroll Processing Consultant will partner with the Payroll team to assess the current state of payroll operations, identify process gaps, and develop optimized workflows that strengthen compliance, accuracy, and efficiency. This individual will serve as a high-level subject matter expert, conducting end-to-end analysis of payroll processes.Payroll Operations & Compliance:
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment of current payroll processes, reporting, reconciliation, and agency interactions (if applicable)
- Evaluate multistate payroll tax compliance and identify gaps, pain points, and process inconsistencies
- Review tax notice handling, amendment processes, and year-end activities (W2s, W2c, etc.)
- Assess current state of controls, documentation, and audit readiness
- Provide guidance and mentorship to the Payroll teammates on payroll matters
- Recommend process enhancements that strengthen compliance, accuracy, and efficiency across the payroll lifecycle
- Work with the Payroll team to develop documentation, SOPs, process maps, and training materials for long-term sustainability
- Identify opportunities to streamline work between Payroll, HR, HRIS, Accounting/Finance, and ADP/vendor partners
- Review payroll configuration and setup to ensure accurate configuration and reporting
- Recommend system adjustments to support improved processes
- Recommend improvements that reduce response time, increase accuracy, and minimize penalties or exposure
- Support the Payroll team in resolving escalated or complex tax or payroll matters
- Work closely with Payroll teammates to mentor and upskill the team on improved payroll practices
- Provide clear, actionable recommendations and present findings to leadership
- 10+ years of advanced payroll tax or operations experience including multistate and complex environments
- Demonstrated experience assessing payroll operations and designing improved workflows
- Strong expertise with Workday and ADP or similar enterprise payroll platforms
- Proven ability to diagnose problems, manage exposure, and develop process solutions
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to operate independently in consulting capacity
- CPP or FPC certification
- Experience with multi federal/state entity or high-volume organizations
- Prior consulting or project-based payroll experience
- Strategic and analytical problem solving
- High accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong leadership presence and consulting communication skills
- Ability to simplify complex payroll issues
- Efficiency driven, with a focus on process sustainability
