Schedule: Full-time, flexible hours including two evenings per week and on-call responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor, the Peer Support Specialist is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
  • Peer Support Specialist will utilize their lived experience to guide individuals through their recovery journey through individual and group peer support sessions;
  • Maintain a caseload of individuals including, but not limited to individuals who have served in the military and their families, adults with serious mental illness; individuals coping with substance use disorders and individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders;
  • Establish a positive social environment and encourage individuals to build meaningful relationships with the goal of building their recovery capital;
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships specific to supporting veterans, members of the military and their families;
  • Participates as a member of community-based meetings;
  • Participates in team-based care and shared decision-making, collaborates with other staff members to support the individual in achieving recovery;
  • Performs regular follow-up activities that includes face to face contact, telephone outreach, and community outreach;
  • Provide advocacy services including assisting individuals and their families to navigate the behavioral health system, Veteran's support services and community social services;
  • Provide non-clinical case management services to the individual and their family and support individual in identifying their service needs, provide referrals and linkages as needed;
  • Assist individual in identifying recovery supports and exploring social and recreational activities;
  • Promotes person-driven services and recovery-orientated environment; assists individuals and their family in making decisions, taking action and treatment planning. Provides education and information to the individual and their family;
  • Documents all interactions with individual and communicates with team, maintains accurate and up-to-date information in the individual's electronic health record;
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings and individual supervisions per agency standards;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Peer Certificate (NJ CPRS or NAADAC NCPRSS) or in pursuit of Peer Certification
  • At least one year of experience in provision of recovery-related supports;
  • Personal or family lived experience with mental health or substance use;
  • Personal or family lived experience with military service preferred;
  • Knowledge of recovery-based concepts and interventions;
  • Knowledge of military and veteran culture, support networks and resources;
  • Bilingual is preferred;
  • Valid driver's license.

Programs funded through SAMHSA must follow federal guidelines for a drug free workplace.
