Role Overview
Our client is seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals to join our team as a Special Education Paraprofessional / Behavioral Support Specialist. In this role, you will be instrumental in supporting the academic, functional, and behavioral needs of students with special needs across specialized educational programs, focusing on preparation for transition back to their home school environment or community settings. This position requires a commitment to implementing effective, individualized educational programs and providing direct care.
Key Program Areas
The role supports students across the following specialized programs:
Autistic Support: Serving students (Kindergarten through age 21) who require specialized environments to address academic, functional, and behavioral needs beyond traditional Autistic Support classrooms.
Emotional Support: Serving students (Kindergarten through 12th grade) who exhibit behavioral challenges in traditional settings, providing support for academic, functional, emotional, and behavioral growth.
Responsibilities
As a Paraprofessional / Behavioral Support Specialist, you will work closely with teachers, case managers, and behaviorists to provide comprehensive support for students with special needs. Essential functions include:
Behavioral and Instructional Support:
Implement instructional programs and behavioral support strategies as directed by the case manager and teacher.
Provide one-on-one or small group instruction in areas including cognitive, gross/fine motor skills, feeding, self-help, and behavior control.
Monitor and manage student behavior in accordance with established guidelines and implement positive behavior intervention support policies.
Prepare and support students for participation in mainstreamed classroom activities according to established procedures.
Assist students in developing appropriate social interactions.
Functional and Health Support:
Assist students with personal hygiene, including hand/face washing, toileting, changing diapers, and managing clothing as needed.
Assist in meeting specialized physical needs, which may include feeding, positioning, monitoring health conditions, and assisting with braces or other orthopedic equipment (lifting, positioning, and repositioning students).
Maintain awareness of the environment to ensure the health and safety of physically handicapped students.
Administrative and Collaboration:
Assist the teacher in maintaining a variety of records related to student progress.
Collaborate effectively with case workers, general education teachers, and other staff members.
Attend required periodic and special training sessions related to medical interventions and instructional programs.
Work both cooperatively with others and independently as necessary to meet student needs.
Perform other duties similar in scope and function as required.
Required Shifts
This is a full-time, Monday through Friday position. Two shifts are available:
Shift 1: 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM (30-minute unpaid break)
Shift 2: 8:30 AM – 3:15 PM (30-minute unpaid break)
Qualifications
Experience working with children or adolescents with disabilities, behavioral challenges, or complex medical/functional needs.
Demonstrated ability to follow specific instructional and behavioral protocols.
Physical ability to perform essential functional tasks, including assisting with lifting, positioning, and personal hygiene.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with staff and students.
