Summary:

Interprets and evaluates medication orders. Prepares and dispenses medications to patients and staff.

Schedule & Coverage

  • Pharmacy Hours: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Required Scheduled Shifts: Friday through Sunday
  • Call Requirement: Two nights per week (example: Friday and Saturday nights)
  • Weekend Coverage: The pharmacist functions as the sole pharmacist on duty during weekend operations

Responsibilities:

The Pharmacist will provide pharmacist coverage for a critical access inpatient pharmacy operation. This position requires a high level of independence, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to effectively manage workflow in a solo coverage environment.

  • Verification of medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness. Review of medication profiles. Assists in the resolution of drug therapy problems. Participation in medical and multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Perceive and evaluate the medication information needs of patients and families, health care professionals, and other personnel.
  • Use a systematic approach to address medication information needs by effectively searching, retrieving, and evaluating the literature and appropriately communicating and applying the information to the patient care situation.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, QA program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Compounds, packages, labels and dispenses medications.
  • Maintains proper inventory control and storage including the secure storage of controlled substances and inventory records.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services and workshops.
  • Oversees the activities of technicians, interns and students. Participates in training pharmacists, technicians, students and residents.
  • Participates in education programs for pharmacy staff, attends meetings as required and participates on committees as needed.
  • Consults with and advises healthcare providers regarding optimal and cost effective utilization of drugs. Where appropriate, documents clinical activities.
  • Responsible for adherence to the Department Compliance Plan for Controlled substances.
  • Performs dispensing and compounding functions utilizing automated technology.
  • Performs other functions as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Pharmacy.
  • New Mexico Board of Pharmacy License required.
  • Less than one year experience in pharmacy practice.
  • Has acquired the necessary practice skills in order to appropriately evaluate medication orders.
  • Skills acquired through experience or self-study.
  • Comfortable working independently in a solo coverage setting.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and clinical skills.
  • Can effectively prioritize workflow and patient care responsibilities.
  • Have experience in hospital/inpatient pharmacy practice preferred.
